How to get Dorico installed

I couldn’t find a better place to post this, although there might be one, and I just didn’t look long enough.

I successfully downloaded Library Manager, Download Manager, and Activation Manager. I got to a window that allowed me to download a bunch of files, but I don’t know what they are for, or how to use them. I can’t get any music related software in this environment. I downloaded the free trial version, and didn’t run into any problems or show stoppers. There just doesn’t seem to be a program for music scoring included. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, Frank. I’ve moved your thread to its own post for clarity. Check out this video, which shows the complete process for installing and activating Dorico:

Hopefully this will help you get up and running, but if not, please let me know.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, the link (and the video) only show one path, and that is to purchase the $149 package, which I am reluctant to do, since I have no way of finding out what the software can actually do. Is there any way to get the free trial version path to work, so I can try it out? I currently use PhotoScore and Sibelius, and these do what I need. I would be amenable to purchasing new software if I found something that worked better.

Frank

The installation process is identical for both the trial and full version if I recall correctly.

Ah, apologies, Frank. You already have the trial version of Dorico Pro 5 in your account (I’ve just checked!) so you can skip over the first minute of the video, and pick things up at the point where you visit Get Your Steinberg Product | Steinberg, which is here:

Run Steinberg Download Assistant, and sign in when prompted. Once you are returned back to Steinberg Download Assistant from your web browser, in the list of products on the left-hand side, you should see Dorico Pro 5 under My Product Downloads. If it’s not there, expand the Dorico category instead, and find Dorico Pro 5 there. Now, on the right-hand side, click Install All in the top right-hand corner, and wait for all the progress bars to turn green.

If you’re on macOS, you will now find the Dorico 5 icon in your Applications folder: double-click it.

If you’re on Windows, you should see the Dorico 5 shortcut icon on your desktop, but if not, you can find it by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard, then typing “dorico” to search for it.

Thanks so much for your help and patience. It’s up and running now.

Guten Abend Herr dspreadbury,

Sir, I can’t seem to get the download assistant to run on my Mac. I am doing the “cross grade” from an oder Finale version on a PC, to Dorico Pro on my newer Mac and am trying to install the new program on my Mac. I’ve followed the instructions from the video, have successfully downloaded the Download assistant program onto my Mac, but it does not provide an opportunity to “run” or " launch" to complete the process. I’m stuck- downloaded the install assistant but it won’t open to download the rest of it. Thoughts on how to proceed, Bitte? Danke!

Hey there. You’ll want to go into the Applications folder under the Go tab. From there look for the blue folder that says “Steinberg Download Assistant.” It may prompt you to input your activation number found in the email you received. Once that’s taken of, you should see all of the tabs on the left. Go down to the tan that says Dorico, then click on Dorico Pro 5. On the right you’ll see all the stuff you’ll need to download. I’ve provided a snapshot of all the stuff I downloaded. Since you’re coming from Finale like I did, your Garritan instruments can be used with Dorico. Hope this helps.

Thanks very much, Sir. That’s just the problem- I can’t even get that far. I just tried this method- the “Go” tab and the “Applications” from the dropdown, but that just brought about the same blank settings window I’ve been looking at the whole time. Here’s a screenshot of what I’m seeing:

When I try to open the Steinberg Download Assistant Setup folder, a new “Settings” looking window opens up, with only “done” as a possibility (without me getting to do any of the things I need to do to actually open it up).

I guess the issue might be that the SDA installer needs Rosetta, and you might not have Rosetta installed on your Mac. The system should prompt you to install Rosetta, and I wonder whether maybe that’s what that Settings-looking window should be doing, but for some reason it’s not?

If all else fails, you can download everything you need from our web site here:

I see behind the windows the download assist and says install again. Have you already installed all of the files contained in that portion of the assistant? If so, you may want to go to your applications folder again and look for the Dorico 5 Icon which will launch the program for you.

Not familiar with what Rosetta is, but I went to the link provided and am downloading everything individually. I hope they all know that they’re there, and how to talk to each other once they’re all onboard the computer. I would imagine that the Installer does all that higher level thinking and coordination for me.

GeorgeMaster, thanks very much for your engagement and help- Dorico 5 is not currently showing as an icon in my downloads or applications folder.

I feel your pain. I also had trouble when I downloaded this last week. Let me tell you that it is infact worth it, and once you get past this stage, and the learning curb, you will be satisfied with the results.

Yesterday, when I double-clicked the Dorico 5 desktop icon, the program ran. Today, when I do the same thing, nothing happens. Can you give me a list of steps to go from a cold boot to running Dorico 5, or point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

Frank

What you have done ought to do the job! Did the Dorico splash screen appear at all?

Frank, a ridiculous question: is it possible that the program/application is still open from yesterday?

With me, anything is possible, but no, I checked in Task Manager. Not running. Do I need to log in to the Steinberg site or something?
