I saw some forums which have recommended enabling independent voice playback for each staff for dynamics on a piano to apply separately for each hand. I also saw some recommendations for dynamics for different voicing within a staff which I might use and I might not, so I’ll get to that later if necessary.
With the VST I am currently using, I have an issue where this VST does not have separate input channels, so in Dorico I need to use separate VST instruments rather than having both staves on different channels of the same instrument. Which worked for a few days for separating the dynamics, now it has reverted however, and dynamics applied to any staff apply to both. So, I was wondering if I could have any help in resolving that.
The information there is a little sparse and I already have dynamics written in for ~20 minutes of music, so I’m not sure if I would be interested in rewriting the dynamics with carets manually for that much sheet music. Is there a way to automate the voice-specific dynamics so that it applies across all of the flows on a project?
I tried to look for tutorial videos on the subject and could not find any. If you can find one please link it.
Take the time and effort to find the dynamics you’ve entered which should apply to only one staff of the piano and change them to voice-specific dynamics.
Create one player holding the Treble staff instrument and another holding the Bass staff instrument and brace them together like this:
The advantage of the second option is that you don’t need to use voice-specific dynamics. The drawback is that dynamics which should apply to both staves of the piano need to be entered twice and then one of them needs to be hidden.
Ok, did the second option, it’s working so far for dynamics for each staff. Now I need to use voice-specific dynamics within a staff and I think I’m misinterpreting the manual. I have the caret active, I place the dynamics with the desired note selected, and the dynamic that I placed is applied to all voices in the staff?
Voice specific dynamics work great, and you soon get used it - just remember to use Alt Enter, and that you have to be in input mode. And you need to be cognisant of one trick - when entering a hairpin in this way is it not visible until you press space. This is in the manual but it’s easy to miss, and an FAQ!
One my requested features would be to provide some way to see what voice a dynamic is attached, because after the fact it is effectively impossible to tell. I hope Steinberg can add this in the future.
