By default both regular notehead and circled notehead for snare in a drum staff are mapped to MIDI note 38. How can I map the circled notehead to MIDI 37, which will give me the cross-stick sound?
If you want to input this directly, try changing Input onto kit or grid to Use percussion map on the Note Input and Editing page of Preferences. Then you can play note 37 (C#2) to input the side-stick sound, and note 38 (D2) to input the regular snare hit.
Hi @dspreadbury, that’s not exactly what I meant. As per your post below, Cross stick - circled notehead should be mapped to MIDI note 32 by default, so I was wondering why in my Dorico it isn’t (I didn’t change any mapping, all the settings are as installed) and how to change it to default.
I’m attaching screenshots from my Dorico - regular snare mapped correctly to MIDI note 38 and Cross stick mapped incorrectly to MIDI note 38:
Edit: sorry, I see now I confused the midi notes and Side stick / Cross stick in my original post, but I believe it’s clear in this post what I want to achieve.
What settings do you have chosen on the Note Input and Editing page of Preferences? Are you trying to input using the pitches defined in the percussion map, or are you trying to input using the pitches that correspond to positions on the five-line staff? You will probably find it easiest to use the option to input according to the percussion map, as then you can input the different techniques for snare drum directly by playing the appropriate note that produces the desired sound on your MIDI keyboard.
I have the input set according to the 5-line staff, becasue that’s how I “process” drums in my head. Using percussion map for input would be quite an adjustment in the workflow for me, so I was wondering if there is any way to make that circled notehead in snare position be mapped to MIDI 32?
IIRC The association between MIDI 32 and a name for the sound produced would be something you’d do in a Percussion Map. The association of that sound description with the notehead shape and position on a five-line staff would be something to assign in the Kit definition. So there are two steps to this process.
Thanks, that’s it. I just edited the percussion map. Turned out to be simpler than I expected. It’s just a pity it isn’t automatically mapped in a way that cross stick sounds like cross stick.
IIRC Finale once had a “one-step” screen where one could assign a MIDI number at the same time one defined the notation, but they abandoned it years ago for a two-step process not completely unlike what Dorico came up with. I’m guessing there was some flexibility this two-step process provides, although I was sorry when Finale made their change.
