How to merge multi-rests (score)

Somehow one of my layouts got messed up and I have two multi-rests in a row at 8bars each. I’d like to merge them back into one 16 bar rest. Anyone know how to do this? I se splitting but not merging in the manual…

I suspect that there is in fact some event (maybe Hidden?) at the “split point”.
If there is no other solution, then Hide the barline between the two multi rests, and Hide the multi-rest itself, and replace it with a graphic. The only other thing you’ll then have to do is set a new bar offset (in this case, 8 bars) after the multi-rest.

hmm-so from your response, it seems like there is no actually way to merge two multi-rests once you split them-is that correct? There isn’t any hidden things going on.

The creation of multi-rests happens automatically (the only exception being that you can set the minimum number of consecutive empty bars before they be converted to a multi-rest). But those bars really do have to be completely empty.
However, as you say, you can split a multi-rest manually (I didn’t realize from your original post that you had done so, or am I misunderstanding? ), by right-clicking on the multi-rest and choosing Properties>“Split Multi-Rest”.
This creates a “Split” event, which, while normally hidden, can be made visible by checkmarking “Split Rests” in the Score Editor’s extended toolbar.
So, in your case, at least you’ll be able to see whether Cubase thinks this was a valid 16-bar multi-rest with a deliberate split at 8 bars (therefore you’ll see a “Split Rest” event), or if not, you can look for something else hidden at the end of bar 8 or the start of bar 9.

This creates a “Split” event, which, while normally hidden, can be made visible by checkmarking “Split Rests” in the Score Editor’s extended toolbar.

Ah-yes! This is what I was missing.

Yes am splitting long rests (48 bars) into 16 bar sections so that the players can relate the rests to the specific sections. I split them manually, and couldn’t figure out how to “un-split” them.

You were correct that there was a hidden event. I had to check the “split rests” box and then delete those and I was able to redo the split.

Thanks!
