How to mix eight notes and half notes

First time user here - previously a user of Finale.

I’m in 4/4 time. In my measure I have entered in 3 eighth notes and I want to add the next note as a half note then the last note would be an eighth note. Dorico is not letting me do this. When I try to enter the half note, it turns it into 2 eights and a quarter note. It’s very annoying that it won’t let me just enter the half note, since that is what I specified and it is well within the timing of the measure.

Dorico is automatically subdividing your half note to ensure that the half-bar remains clear. This follows most standards of music notation, but most importantly, will be what is defined for 4/4 time signatures in this flow - this is set in Library > Notation Options > Note Grouping.

Check in that dialog for alternative defaults for handling rhythms.

If none of the options suit what you want (and you’re sure that what you want will be easily read and understood by performers), then you can use Force Duration to override any note grouping defaults and make Dorico follow exactly what you enter.
