How to put a visible whole rest in empty measure?

Hello,

I’m creating a worksheet, top line has a melody that includes an occasional whole rest, bottom line is blank for students to add accompaniment. I turned off “show rests in empty bars” so the bottom line would be blank, but that also hid the whole rests scattered throughout the top line.

Is there a way to override the setting for one measure, and input a visible rest?

I found this discussion but it made my head hurt: Whole rest in empty measure - wondering if anything has changed since the original post.

Thanks!

I would suggest doing it the other way around: Turn rests in empty bars back on, and then select all of the bars in the bottom line and do Edit > Remove Rests.

Editing my previous reply: I think that only works if there is actually some music in the part somewhere. First time I tried that solution, it didn’t work; later I added some music so I could experiment with hiding notes, and then I could remove the remaining rests. Still: it’s helpful. Thanks!

Ah, good point. But you can add something on the first beat of the piece (note or rest), then remove the other rests. (Or select the item you added and turn on the Ends Voice property, which is the same thing.)

If the initial item you added was a rest, you can hide it by setting its opacity/alpha channel to 0. If it was a note, you can go to Engrave mode and hide its stem and notehead, and suppress playback.

That works. Thank you!
