Hi, I’ve downloaded the free version of Dorico to see if I can notate music and playback through my newly acquired Korg Kronos 2, and hopefuly eventually be able to export the midi files to be ascribed to performance patches on the Kronos.
The Dorico music notation looks fine so far, but I’m no midi expert and I’m having problems getting Dorico to see the keyboard despite having the correct USB B -C cable plugged in.
Question is whether Dorico can do what I want, or am I barking up the wrong tree, should I look at another Steinberg product? All comments gratefully received by this newbie.
One needs to set up one’s MIDI connection in play (via that MIDI area) before one can assign the MIDI channels to link one’s tracks and MIDI player. (One may first see the cable/connection rather than the Korg itself.)
I’ve found that it’s a good idea to have the keyboard plugged in and powered up before starting Dorico (including the Hub). Then start Dorico and check under Preferences/Playback (scroll down until you see the MIDI section) whether your keyboard has been detected and selected.
Thank you both, it turned out my work laptop has its USB port blocked. I have loaded the software on my old MacBook Air and the playback works fine. I have not been able to play from the keyboard directly onto the stave, it seems to register one or two notes after hitting record and then stops. Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Make sure you have sufficient bars created in your project for recording: Dorico won’t create additional bars automatically.
Thank you, maybe I’ve got it all wrong, I was anticipating that I could play the piano and Dorico would take down the notation, no matter how complicated the music, but maybe the midi keyboard is actually used a bit like a QWERTY keyboard ie it’s a shortcut for entering note by note the right pitch but nothing more?
MIDI record will attempt to notate your playing according to the quantization options that you set in Preferences.
As Daniel said, you need to create some empty space for the recording first. Try adding 100 bars (shift-B 100) - you can easily delete the space you don’t use later.
Thank you, that’s really helpful
