How to sidechain from itself in Cubase 14 Pro?

Hello! I want to use a plugin that automatically equalises the signal volume to the primary volume after any changes, for example, a free Melda MAGC.

To use this, I need to activate the sidechain and select the signal from the same track (instrument/audio). This is because the plugin uses this signal to compare the volume before and after and then correct it to the primary volume. In Ableton Live 12, it’s not a problem to sidechain from the same track, but how do I do it in Cubase 14 Pro?

Click ‘e’ for the track, gives you the channelsetting window. There you can select ‘side chaining’ for the track.

@Buer

Can you highlight where it is? I don’t see a possibility to set the sidechain from itself

Try putting the MAGC in an FX-track

Anyway, what is this plugin actually doing?

@Sunnyman

Now it works, thanks!

What this plugin does: it returns the volume to the original level after all plugins in the chain.

Example 1: You can put any compressor before MAGC and set the compression to 20:1 - the volume will decrease, but MAGC will set the volume to the original level. You will hear only the results of compression. To put it bluntly, this is an Autogain after the entire processing chain.

Example 2: You can put any EQ before MAGC and cut all low and mid frequencies - you will hear that it sounds quiet, but MAGC will set the volume to the original level.

Ah, cool. Thx a lot.

Learned something.

But than, why not use an autogain in the first place?

MAGC = Melda Auto Gain Control

If the plugin has automatic make-up gain you probably won’t need MAGC. But there are plenty of plugins who don’t offer that. Filter plugins with a high resonance e.g.

To answer the question in short:
The current architecture of side-chaining in Cubase does not allow for “same channel side-chain”.

Thus the way to do it is, as ever so often in Cubase… drumroll… to use an additional track.

Year, rtfm… thx

I would actually like to see such an effect integrated into each channel in Cubase. I think this should be a DAW feature, not a plugin.
