Hello I am trying to figure out how to tie these two sixteenth notes together in the left measure. When I tie them it turns them into a eighth note (as seen in the right measure) which can be tricky to read especially once I add in the right hand part.
I have searched the forums and read the manual but cannot figure this out.

You may find that Notation Options > Note Grouping > Syncopation has settings that better suit your purposes (switching the very first option in there will fix this, but may have undesirable consequences elsewhere).
On a case by case basis, select the first note, hit O to Force its Duration (locking that note value exactly as it is), then hit T to tie.
