HSSE first recording failed?

Hello :slightly_smiling_face:
I’m a new Cubase 12 Elements user. Having made some easy audio recording, now I’m trying to do a simple HALion Sonic SE recording (from Getting Started of « The complete Guide to Music Technology Using Cubase 12 », Darren Jones).
I have created a new project, then an Instrument Track (Instrument HALion Sonic SE) and picked a sound in HSSE but when I start recording and play on the keyboard, nothing is record and saved on my track ?
Any idea what i’m missing ?
Alain

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Which MIDI Input do you have selected, please?

Can you see incoming MIDI Notes signal on the Transport Panel?

Double-check the Preferences > MIDI > MIDI Filter, please. By default the filter is enabled for the SysEx only (both Record and Thru).

Hi, Are the locator bars set correctly?

Hi,

The Left and Right Locators position don’t play any role (if you don’t activate Cycle) while recording. Or am I missing something?

Thanks for your help Martin :slightly_smiling_face:

« Can you see incoming MIDI Notes signal on the Transport Panel? → Yes, VU meters detect notes signal.

« Double-check the Preferences > MIDI > MIDI Filter, please. By default the filter is enabled for the SysEx only (both Record and Thru). » → Yes

« Which MIDI Input do you have selected, please? » → I haven’t selected any. I’ve search in doc (Steinberg & D. Jones) how to do this but…

How do I select a MIDI input for HSSE ?

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:

No, my little experience with audio recording indicate you are right :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi,

Same field in the Inspector as the audio track’s input is. Or in the MixConsole.

I don’t see where is my mystake :upside_down_face:
Here is a screen shot :

if they are both set at the same location it does not matter if cycle mode is enabled or not, you cannot record, well you can hit record and it will start scrolling, but no data will be recorded on midi track, at least this is what happens to me, try it.
I can see this is not original posters problem from screen shot, but it is something I’ve known people do in the past. I even tested this before posting to see if this was still the case.
Edit, only tested for midi, not audio.
Edit, Sorry, just tested this again, and you are both correct, it does still record…I really did test before posting last night, strange, sorry

Thanks for the infos :upside_down_face:
For audio recording you can record when they are both set at the same location (i have re-tested) :slightly_smiling_face:

Yeah, ignore my previous post, I’m wrong, I’d swear i remember this happening in the past, and as I said I did test before posting, but that was at about 5am here and perhaps I did something dumb like hitting play instead of record

Haha :upside_down_face: thanks

Did you try to record by pressing the keys on the Halion plugin keyboard?

Yes :slightly_smiling_face:

That will not work. That keyboard is fine for previewing the sounds but there is no midi sent back to Cubase track.

Try the computer keyboard instead ( press Alt + K)

Oh thanks, it’s ok now :slightly_smiling_face:

So I can try to connect my new “Akai MKP mini” for more fun :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, playing your Akai should record fine :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi,

Or you can use the On-screen Keyboard in Cubase.

Thanks
