I bought update from Cubase10 Pro to Pro 14 and got Cubase 11 instead

Hi,
I had eLicenser with Cubase10 Pro.
I just bought an update to Cubase 14, I followed everything in this post:

This one: https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-us/articles/20162794918162-Checklist-for-the-transition-to-Steinberg-Licensing
And especially this one: https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-us/articles/4414539809426-Steinberg-Licensing-Upgrades-from-eLicenser-based-products

After I bought I saw I have an update to Cubase14 in my account.
The moment I used the eLicenser center to put the Verification code- it showed that I now have “Cubase Pro 11 (Upgraded to Cubase 12 with Steinberg Licensing)”

I downloaded Cubase14 and it worked, but why do I see in MySteinberg and in the eLicenser that I have Cubase12 as a “Software” based license?

What can I do?

Thanks

Hi @oreldm,

well done!

  • Answer: migration to Steinberg Licensing is kind of a one-way ticket
  • Cubase 11: last version within the old eLicensing system
  • Cubase 12: first version (March 2022) within the new Steinberg Licensing
  • between Cubase 11 and 12 → a downwards compatibility breaking “gap”
  • like Cubase 11 and any version before, every newer version (like Cubase 14) will again be downwards compatible, yet only backwards to version 12, but not to any older Cubase version (due to the gap, as both licensing systems are incompatible).
  • the new Steinberg Licensing is an account ID based, dongle-free system
  • Example 1: a future Cubase user who buys a license for Cubase 22 will also be able to run Cubase 12 as the oldest accessible version within Steinberg Licensing
  • Example 2: if said user still had a working eLicenser USB dongle containing the “finalized” Cubase 11 eLicense, they could (given a compatible computer and OS, and “theoretically”) also install and run Cubase 11, including all older versions of it, way back to Cubase SX 3.

Hope that this helps.

Best wishes,
Markus

Check activation manager. If C14 shows activated everything is fine.

Why on Earth are Cubase selling upgrades from 11 to 14 then???
I bought that, but I could not choose Cubase 11 in the eLincenser for upgrading… Used a lot of hour to try to make it work. (Had the newest version)
After 3 weeks without response on my ticket I asked PayPal for the money back and I got it…
But I still would love to get Cubase 14…:-/
But how?

Did you:

Don’t understand your question…Because you can upgrade from 11 to 14. Why wouldn’t they sell it?

If you want to get C14 you’ll need to do it before the end of elicenser in March. I’m sure if you post here with full details of the system and why it won’t install someone will be able to help. Did you check if your 11 license was eligible for Grace period? That one catches a few people out as they find they actually have one version later than they thought already.

Thanks!
Thank you. That’s all I needed. It is there so it looks everything is fine.

If I change computer- is it possible to disable it FROM THE NEW COMPUTER?
Lets say my computer is having a problem and cannot be up anymore.
Also - Can I throw the eLicenser now? As I think I don’t need it anymore, right?

Thanks!!

Yes, definitely! You can remove replaced or computers no longer in use. Login to your MySteinberg account. Go to ‘Products’ and click on “Deactivate licenses on unavailable computers”.

If you have Cubase 14 up and running and no other applications are running on the elicencer you won’t need it anymore.

However, if you’d ever want to run Cubase 10 for any reason, like old projects with plugins that were used in this version that won’t run on Cubase 14 or later, it might be a good idea to just keep it and store it in save place (And save the latest (last!) elicencer sofware)? Because Cubase 10 won’t run under the new Activation Manager. You’ll need the elicencer to run it.

What is that? I got Cubase Pro 11 some years ago.

I just got the latest versions of eLincenser and Activation Manager.
After purchasing the C11 to C14 upgrade and using Activation Manager it said I should select C11 in eLincenser to upgrade it, but as the picture shows it was greyed out and could not be selected… So I could not activate Cubase Pro 14 :-/

OK, 2 things going on here:

  1. None of your licenses are showing as available (No entry signs). So your usb elicenser isn’t being recognised. Check it’s plugged in, try a different usb port, update elicenser software, you need these no entry signs to go away before anything else can work. If you’ve been using C11 then presumably your licenses were available at that point so maybe you unplugged the elicenser since then??

  2. Your license is grace period eligible so you can upgrade for free to C12. SO the upgrade you need to buy if you want to upgrade is the 12 to 14 one. Of course 12 is already on Steinberg licensing so you can update anytime…no need to do it before elicenser shutdown.

Well I got the eLicenser when I bought Cubase 6 and have been upgrading 2 times to Cubase Pro 11. I think the eLicenser is working when I run C11, because if I remove the dungle C11 will not start.
If I log in to My Steinberg it shows:

…

Can you open c11 right now?

If yes then run grace period check from inside Steinberg download assistant and update to 12.

Thx Grim
But now it begin to show thiswhen it starts up (It didn’t a month ago)

And if I click on Cubase Pro 12:

and 6 more errors (where it says failed). These kind of errors has shown the last months…
Can’t see where else in the Steinberg download assistant to upgrade C11 to C12 …

Sorry the place to do the grace period update it’s in activation manager not download assistant… But I think you’ll still have problems if your download assistant is failing. Try to research download assistant issues and see if any fixes work.

Yeah! This is a hard nut to crack;)
In the activation manager there is only listed Cubase Pro 14 with the Verification Pending Expired (Because it would not activate… No C11 or C12 there).
I have downloaded C14, but it would not activated, so I’m not sure this problem is because of downloading issues.
Maybe my eLincenser is half broke? It works when running C11, but the upgrade part does not work.
I have send in a ticket again to Steinberg telling about the problem asking for a discount of a full Cubase Pro 14 that maches the price I should pay for for the C11 to C14 upgrade.
I believe that is the best solution to my problem… but no response as usual:-/

Once you run the Grace period update you just buy the C12 to 14 update. It will be cheaper than the 11 to 14 update.

Follow through this pprocess (licese already activated, cubase 11 options) to see how to get 12 grace period update in activation manager.

Thx Grim
But I have no Download Access Code for Cubase 12…
In your link they ask for:
Unused Download Access Code or Activation Code
If you have an unused Download Access Code or Activation Code for a Steinberg program, please redeem it first
?

I don’t think you read my post properly. There are two option buttons to push in that page. I told you which ones.

Oops sorry. Didn’t thought I had License allready Activated;)
But that helped! Thanks a lot Grim: You are the best!

Did it help enough to get the license updated to 12 or just got you on to the next problem?
