I can no longer print from Dorico

Hi. As of yesterday afternoon, I can no longer print any file from Dorico. The printer displays a message that the file can’t be printed because it’s corrupt. I tried a half-dozen projects with the same result. I also upgraded the print driver on Windows 11, to no avail. Why would Dorico printing stop working all of a sudden?

The printer itself displays a message? On its control panel? What model of printer?
Can you print from other apps?
Can you export a PDF from Dorico’s print mode and print that?

Did you try to restart your computer and printer?

It’s an HP Laser Jet Pro M452dw and the message comes up in the printer’s control panel as well as the printer status app on Windows 11. Every other app prints, including Finale (dig here). A PDF will print, but I don’t understand why printing from Dorico started to fail yesterday.

That was the first thing I tried. I also removed the printer and reinstalled it.

Can you supply a screenshot of the right-hand panel in Print mode?

And a Diagnostic report (from the Help menu), immediately after trying?

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.2 MB)

Thanks! Hope this sheds some light. Also, I also tried reinstalling Dorico, to no avail.

I tried printing from a PDF, and the print quality is just not as good as direct printing from Dorico. Has anyone else experienced that?

No: it should be exactly the same. You’re using Dorico’s own Graphics export, not a Windows PDF-making print queue?

Is the quality of the PDF on-screen ok when you zoom in massively, or not?

Interesting question. I tried a number of options. For example, I tried printing to TIFF at 600dpi. The TIFFs printed out as well as Dorico, but when I converted them to PDF, they lost quality. I also tried maximizing the print quality in Acrobat (600dpi, 100% scaling) to no avail. This seems a waste of time when I could print from Dorico beautifully until yesterday!

To answer your question, there were absolutely no jaggies when I zoomed in to max.

OK: if the printer is printing a decent, vector PDF file in a “not as good” way, and isn’t printing from Dorico at all; then maybe it’s something at the printer itself.

I presume you’ve turned the printer off and on, and checked its config?

Can you print to it wirelessly, without using the driver software?

The resolution on the PDF is fine, but staff lines, hairpins, etc. are thicker than on the Dorico display (and former Dorico printouts). I have set them very thin to match Finale’s style.

I’ve tried everything when it comes to the printer. The printer is wireless, but I have no idea how to bypass the Windows 11 driver.

One of the Dorico team will no doubt have a look at the diagnostic report, but as far as I can see, Dorico is working properly.

Can you try creating a new print queue in Windows? Maybe delete the old queue and create another one with a new name?

What is the exact text of the message on the printer control panel?

In fairness, that was never a good look! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

When you say “never a good look” do you mean Finale’s style? I like Dorico’s style (and interface) infinitely better, but I did think that Finale’s width of staves, barlines, and hairpins was more elegant. It was easy to configure Dorico to match that. Unfortunately, that’s not matched in the PDF printout.

An on-screen PDF “print” has to account for screen resolution, but if you are talking about a paper printout of your PDF file, then that’s another matter.

It is certainly another matter. The PDF looks perfect on screen but when it prints out, the lines are too thick. I’ve tried to find out how to get better print resolution to no avail.

Gotta ask a typical support question in cases like this…

Can you think of any change on your computer between when it printed and when it didn’t? Did anything at all get updated? Any settings changes?

Good question. Now that you mention it, there was a change. I had no problems as of Thursday. I tried printing the file yesterday (Friday) and discovered that the print driver no longer recognized automatic duplex printing. I deleted and reinstalled the printer. Afterwards, duplex worked fine but Dorico stopped working.

Did you replace the printer driver, or just delete then reinstall the printer (connection)?
Also, sometimes there can be an alternative CUPS printer driver. I am just wondering if you see it listing.
