I can't find the midi scratchpad in Sonic 7

I recorded 8 bars of playing on Halion Sonic 7 and now I can’t find any way to clear them. Google AI keeps telling me there’s a scratchpad for editing midi ideas and that I can “Clear” the midi data there but I cannot find it anywhere. I would eventually like to use the midi function to create some simple sequencer lines but right now I just want those notes gone because every time I mistakenly hit the play button they start playing.

The stand alone version of Sonic has a very basic recorder.
Using the Standalone Version of the Plug-in • HALion Sonic Help • Reader • Steinberg

This built in sequencer does not exist when using Sonic as a plugin in some other host. In that case, you’d use the sequencing abilities of the host instead.

I just want to delete the data I recorded so it won’t start playing when I accidently hit play by hitting the spacebar.

I see. The documentation says nothing about a way to clear the recorded sequence. Seems like one way to ‘clear it’ is to set it to have no recording channel filters (all), tap record, and just play nothing in for a bar or two. Stop it, and the sequence should then be empty.

You could also unbind the space bar from sending the play/stop command.
Right click anywhere in that top tool bar where the sequencer is, and choose “Key Commands…”. There you could remove or change the key that stops/starts the sequencer tool bar.

I’ll try the record thing. I’ve only started it by accident a couple times so it’s not really too much of a problem and its simple enough to stop it but mostly I just don’t want the notes to be there. So the record is just a one take thing? Whenever I search for anything regarding this feature the results suggest I’m able to edit the midi data for creating arp sequences. For the life of me I cannot find anything in Sonic 7 that points to being able to edit the recorded midi. BTW I’m really new to Halion S7. I’m just setting it up for live shows with a hardware synth and a controller for Halion patches.

edit: “Record” didn’t delete it. This record function is sure not very intuitive

The scratch pad in Sonic has no editor…it’s more for loading existing MIDI files and playing them back. I.E. In a performance scenario, one might want to load up General MIDI backing tracks and such to play along with, or one can use Sonic as a basic General MIDI player.

You can record with it, and write those takes to a MIDI file, but only simple one-takes, and there’s not way to edit those takes in Sonic itself.

There is an arp engine in Sonic called FlexPhraser, but that’s a bit different. It allows you to build arp patterns, or to import MIDI clips.

I.E. You could use the scratch pad to make a phrase and save it, then import it into the FlexPhraser.

I see. I’m guessing that Halion 7 might be better equipped for stuff like that…or perhaps using Halion S7 from within a DAW for making arpeggiator sequences

Can you create flex phrases in Sonic 7 and then export the midi?

Full HALion 7 has the same basic sequencer as Sonic, and again it’s only in Stand Alone mode.

If you need more powerful editing tools while creating your performances, it’s better to host Sonic/HALion inside something with full blown multi-track sequencing abilities.

Yes, you could record something and save it as a MIDI File…
Drag that file into the FlexPhraser…
