I can't get a 12/8 time signature

Hello all. I’m being really dense but I can’t find a way of changing the crotchet to a dotted crotchet in the tempo display. I want dotted crotchet
= 110 and currently have crotchet = 110. Clicking to change the tempo in the allocated window gives me the option to change the speed but not the base unit of tempo (ie I can’t find how to change the crotchet to a dotted crotched). I’m using Cubase Pro 13. Any help greatly appreciated.

This is not possible in Cubase. The time base is always a quarter note. So, you will need to enter 165 in the tempo field (so that the tempo is actually correct) and pretend it doesn’t read 165.

Edit: Here is the feature request, if you also believe it’s an important thing to have in Cubase, come have a say.

Well, it’s worth mentioning that the grid can be set to any rhythmic value.

I am probably missing something, but still…

  1. Adding a time signature track
  2. Drawing a 12/8 ‘signature event’ in it

…don’t make the job ?

The problem is that @pianocol probably has a score at hand (or intends to produce a score) that will have a tempo of “Dotted Quarter = 110”. You cannot define it like this in Cubase. You can say I want a tempo of “Quarter = 165” which is the same speed.

Edit: to put it in an equation,

12/8 measure of 12 eighth notes AT “Quarter = 165” = 12/8 measure of 12 eighth notes AT “Dotted Quarter = 110”.

Thank you all for your prompt help. I’m away from the computer at the moment but will try changing the tempo to 165

If you don’t mind the tempo number not agreeing with your intended tempo, and also use the tools @steve proposed above, you’re going to be able to work just fine.

OK, it is more complicated than I thought at first.

So I was indeed missing something…
