Iconica playback templates and solo strings

Iconica Sections & Players does not include solo strings. But, if a project includes both a solo violin and a violin section (in that order), and you apply the official Iconica playback template, the solo violin is routed to the Violins I patch In HALion, and the violin section goes nowhere.

I don’t understand this. As you would expect, the template doesn’t include endpoints for single string players.

In my ignorance I would have expected Dorico to say to itself “Here’s a single player violin. What does the template say about a single player violin? Nothing, so I won’t assign an endpoint to it”. If it did that, the violin section would be handled by the template and the solo violin could be picked up by (for example) NotePerformer. Can anyone explain, please?

It works correctly if you have a separate solo violin player. But it does not work if your solo violin is part of a divisi. In that case you need to use independent voice playback and set up the routing manually.

It’s nothing to do with divisi.

If I create an empty project, add a single violin player and apply the Iconica template, no endpoint is created.

If I now add a violin section player, and leave it in its default position below the single player, an Iconica Strings instance of HALion is created, and the single player is routed to the Violins I patch. No endpoint is assigned to the section player.

I don’t pretend to understand how this works. (I bought Iconica on the basis that, like NotePerformer, the official template would make it unnecessary for me to understand this.) But what seems to be happening is that an Iconica instance is created only if the project includes a player of a kind that exists in Iconica, i.e. not a single string player. Once a strings instance is created, however, the first player holding a violin instrument is routed to the Violins 1 patch ⎯ even if that is a single player.

Dorico playback templates use Iconica Sketch and (IIRC) do not work with the full Iconica. Have you created your own Playback Template?
