Hello Dorico team,
I hope you are doing great!
You could pass this improvement request to the guys behind Iconica Sketch.
The library is pretty nice but almost useless directly hosted in Dorico. It sounds fine only hosted by NotePerformer.
The library needs improvement in the following areas:
The samples should be balanced.
In case of having long notes after short articulations (e.g. staccato and then long note) the following long (sustain) note sounds much quieter than the staccato-ed one. NP fixes this problem to a good degree, but not completely.
If the library is directly hosted in Dorico this issue is pretty noticeable. The transition between the short and long note isn’t smooth.
The Tambourine sounds more like closed Hi-hat, than real tambourine.
Probably the sample should be re-edited, or replaced?!
Would be pretty nice if we have a Bass Trombone in the library, too.
Some other common articulations e.g. Harmonics, Con Sordino (for the Strings and the Brass + hand mute for Horns), Bartok pizz… will be very welcomed
The library is free for us as Dorico and Cubase / Nuendo users, but still it’s a paid product for the others, so an improvement will be a good idea.
Since Iconica Sketch is a subset of Iconica, I doubt Steinberg will undertake to resample the entire library. The original Iconica was intended primarily for use with Cubase and other DAW’s, where users balanced the instruments themselves.
Aside from including a Bass Trombone to sketch, I think the train has already left the station.
Hi @Thurisaz - I’m not exactly sure, but maybe for (1) above, the samples could be re-prepared and packaged in the library sound set itself, to achieve better ‘balance’ as you suggest.?
For items 2, 3, and 4 - I cannot imagine there will ever be a chance of this happening. The recording session that produced the (range of) samples in the first place, is over and done. Finished. There can be no added instruments (or ‘re-recordings’ to your taste) that would be consistent with that initial setup, etc…
Substitutes or replacement instrument samples will be a very tricky exercise, to match conditions of the day. Too much danger of a different ‘tambourine’ sample, sticking out like a sore thumb.! Similarly with the other bits you ask for…
You’ll only be back here writing about how you think that could/should be improved etc…
The library is what it is.
(EDIT - I see @Derrek has done a better, more concise job of responding.!)
The #1 is just a matter of audio editing process, nothing new should be recorded here.
About #2 well, I don’t know how the tambourine sounds in the Full library, but having in mind that Iconica was sampled by Orchestral Tools, and it’s sounds pretty close to the Berlin Series… the Tambourine in the Berlin Percussion sounds as it should, not like hi-hat.
To me Iconica is like a reduced version of the Berlin Series. They both sound pretty similarly. And the recording studio is the same…
Most probably 3 and 4 are possible as well, in case Orchestral Tools doesn’t mind to supply Iconica.
