Import/export problems Nuendo 14

I’m having a weird problem which I have never encountered before. I record an instrument track in Nuendo 14, export it via the audio mixdown panel, which renders it perfectly well as an audio file (AIFF). This file plays back perfectly well on other players (Wavelab 12, QuickTime etc.) But when I try to import it into Nuendo again - either using the same project or a new project (and using the standard import settings including ‘convert to Project bitrate if necessary’), the result is just a crackle. I’ve tried checking/changing the audio card buffer settings. I am using the same record format throughout (32 bit float, 44.1 kHz).

Maybe I am missing something very obvious - or not! I would much appreciate some wise advice. Thanks in advance

OK I am answering this myself and hoping this might help someone else with a similar problem. I was exporting as 32 bit instead of 32 bit float. So there was a mismatch. Easy mistake to make!
