Import Tracks from Project not working as expected for me

I would like to be able to import the mix settings from one project to another.
For example, I record a band and we do multiple songs as separate projects, but with the same microphone and general mix layout.

Once I’ve mixed the first track I would like to be able to import those mix settings (so plugin details, volume, pan and routing information etc) to the other projects as a start point.

It looks like this should be possible with the Import Tracks From Project setting in the File submenu.
But when I try to do this, it doesn’t work.
This screenshot shows how I am trying to set this up:

I am trying to import just the channel and inspector settings to the matching tracks, but when I hit OK, nothing happens. Nothing is imported or changed and the dialog box just closes.

I can successfully get it working if I leave the events and parts box checked, but then it replaces the audio as well with the previous track.

It also works if you just import to New Tracks instead, and that is the workaround I use at the moment: Import the project to New Tracks and then drag the plugins over manually.

This has been bugging me for a couple of versions now and doesn’t seem to be being fixed or addressed. Is it a bug? Or am I not doing something right?

Try right click on “Inserts” on the track you have your plugs on and “save fx chain preset”, you can then load that in other projects

Yes that is another workaround. Unfortunately, that doesn’t bring across any volume, pan settings etc. And is a many-click vs single-click process.

The easiest way to achieve what you are looking for is to work with a project template. You´ll have all your FX, busses, routings, panning etc in place and you just need to import the actual audio files of the individual songs. Make sure that your labeling system is tight - that way it´s just a one time effort to place all your signals on the right tracks.

Here´s a tutorial that might help

…third time in days I´m recommending this YT channel. No, I´m not that dude nor in any way associated if anybody was wondering…

Just been looking at this issue with my band files.
Solved with creating a project template from the first mix on the first song.
The trick id missed is after mixing the song and saving it was that you then need to go to the pool window and delete all the audio for that song and save the project as a new template. Make sure you close the project then without saving so you don’t overwrite your previously saved mix.
I then create a new project selecting my newly saved template and import the audio for the band into the new project (selecting the different track option). The bands Song 2 is then laid out the same as the first mix. (Assuming the band hasn’t changed its configuration between recording Song 1 and 2, bands breakup and reform so quickly these days lol)

Hope this helps

Thanks Reco29, that video laid out an alternative clearly and I can make it work that way. I also love that divide feature! I didn’t know that existed and will be very useful for separating out tempo and marker information from the main session.

This is good.

I am starting now by making a backup of the project to a new folder called MIX TEMPLATE. That way I can freely delete the existing audio clips and automation without fear of accidently hitting save and destroying the original mix that is being used as the template source.

This will work, but is still a workaround from the original issue. Which is the ability to only import Channel and Inspector settings into matching tracks. Hopefully this will be address in a future update.

Is there anywhere better to submit a bug report?

…Ok more progress. If I try to Import the channel and inspector setting only to matching tracks from the now empty Mix Template session, it works.

It seems the bug is isolated to asking Cubase to import those settings from a session that also has events and parts as part of it, even if you uncheck the box to ignore them, Unchecking that box breaks the function and it doesn’t even try to import anything.

** Performing the Import from a Mix Template that has already been stripped of Events and Parts allows the function to work more in line with what I expect. **

It would be great if the original bug can be fixed, but this will be fast enough for now.

Thank you to everyone who jumped in with advice here, I appreciate it!

One further thought if you are working with specific tracks for import what about using the track preset option. Save the setting as you define and use the preset to recall.
