Imported midi and wav files not in synch

I’ve been having a weird problem. When I import midi and wav files into Cubase that I arranged in Reaper, sometimes they are out of synch.

I always make the midi track the drum track and export it with tempo markers, so that it imports into Cubase and Cubase changes the tempo accordingly. Every other instrument I import as a wav file. Sometimes all the instruments line up perfectly, sometimes the midi track seems to be completely out of synch.

My guy who mixes our music in Cubase discovered I had exported Reaper wav files at a lower (44.1 khz) sample rate than Cubase was set to so I went back into reaper and changed the project sample rates to 48000 for the songs that were out of whack and exported them at that rate.

It didn’t help. And it doesn’t help that this only happens about half the time. Half the time all the midi and wav files import perfectly in time with each other and sometimes the midi track is longer/faster than the wave files.

Also, sometimes I import a midi file first it asks if I want to create a new project (which changes the tempo in Cubase) and sometimes I just change the tempo in Cubase to the original tempo of the tracks in Reaper and then import everything and I don’t know what to do because when a particular song is giving me trouble it doesn’t matter which order (wav or midi) tracks get imported into Cubase.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi,

If you want to import a MIDI file to already existing project and you want to keep the tempo is the existing project, enable the Ignore Master Track Events in the Import Options dialog, please.

Also important: when audio files include already rendered tempo changes, do not set them to “musical mode”.

I solved it:

In case anyone else has this problem.

Render (or export) your wav and midi files to a separate folder in your DAW. (I’m using Reaper.) So in my folder for a particular song I add a separate folder for audio and midi files.

In Cubase I make sure the tempo is set beforehand to the tempo of the song in Reaper.

I remove any excess tracks that show up in a new project until it is completely empty.

Then I import the wav files. They should import with the original names (drums, slide bass, jazz sax, etc) into Cubase.

Import the midi track last.

I converted one song from Reaper to Cubase that had tempo changes with markers and imported the midi first before I learned this, and miraculously that one came out fine.
