Importing Video - what codec?

Hi,

Recently upgraded from Windows XP/Cubase 5 to Windows 8/Cubase 7 - all working flawlessly!

Now I’m working on a video project for the first time with the new set-up. In Cubase 5 it was a bit picky about what video codecs it would use…but I can’t find one that will work on Cubase 7. (I have full adobe CS6 media encoder so I can make any type of video file I like).

Anyone confirm any working format/codec combinations,

Thanks,

Paul

I have the following codecs on my system:

ICM Microsoft YUV UYVY msyuv.dll 6.2.9200.16384
ICM Intel IYUV codec IYUV iyuv_32.dll 6.2.9200.16384
ICM Cinepak Codec by Radius cvid iccvid.dll 1.10.0.12
ICM Microsoft YUV UYVY msyuv.dll 6.2.9200.16384
ICM Toshiba YUV Codec Y411 tsbyuv.dll 6.2.9200.16384
ICM Microsoft YUV UYVY msyuv.dll 6.2.9200.16384
ICM Intel IYUV codec IYUV iyuv_32.dll 6.2.9200.16384
ICM Microsoft RLE MRLE msrle32.dll 6.2.9200.16384
ICM Microsoft Video 1 MSVC msvidc32.dll 6.2.9200.16384
ICM ffdshow Video Codec FFDS ff_vfw.dll 1.2.4422.0
DMO Mpeg4s Decoder DMO mp4s, MP4S, m4s2, M4S2, MP4V, mp4v, XVID, xvid, DIVX, DX50 mp4sdecd.dll 6.2.9200.16384
DMO WMV Screen decoder DMO MSS1, MSS2 wmvsdecd.dll 6.2.9200.16384
DMO WMVideo Decoder DMO WMV1, WMV2, WMV3, WMVA, WVC1, WMVP, WVP2, VC1S wmvdecod.dll 6.2.9200.16384
DMO Mpeg43 Decoder DMO mp43, MP43 mp43decd.dll 6.2.9200.16384
DMO Mpeg4 Decoder DMO MPG4, mpg4, mp42, MP42

I have tried most of these - I always get the message ‘Invalid or not supported file’

My source video is in mp4 format - as you can see I have mp4 codecs installed and the video plays fine on my PC.

So…what format should I use that Cubase 7 will actyally recognise?

PS - The manual is particularly unhelpful. It recommends ‘searching the internet’ for missing codecs. I don’t have missing codecs - Cubase 7 just isn’t using/recognising the ones I have??

Hi Paul - welcome…! Glad to hear all’s going ok so far…

I don’t have C7 yet, waiting for the trial edition first…

When you say it plays fine on your PC, with what does it play nice…? VLC…? Windows Media Player…? Some other player…? Or, QT player…? That’s the one that needs to be checked as I recall.

There are others here who know more, but my view is the general rule of thumb has been if the vid works standalone in QT player, then it should be ok inside Cubase (on the same system). Obviously this varies from system to system, to an extent…

There’s a great Knowledge Base article about video support to read too, which will be for C6.x.x but I’d say still apply to C7. You can find the KnowledgeBase after you log in to your MySteinberg site (where you registered your license).

Good luck
bob

Thanks Bob,

I just installed QT as well - just in case that would give me a solution.

Clip plays fine in QT player. Same error message when I try to import into Cubase

Original clip plays fine in WM Player - as do all the other codecs I have tried.

At the moment it seems to be a change in behaviour of the C7 Video import.

I’ll have a look in the knowledgebase,

Thanks

Paul

OK - Sorted.

Installed FFDshow codec pack as per recommendation on Microsoft website.
Installed Quicktime (and then REBOOTED!).

Now all my video is importing in all formats
