Inconsistent instrument number positioning

Hello,

I’m not sure if this has been addressed before.

I’ve noticed that when condensing is allowed, single players, i.g.: Oboe d’amore I, the player number position ‘I’ is set relative to the left bar of the system. Whereas, section players i.g.: Violine I, the player number is set relative to the paragraph style, in my case, centered. Whereas, when condensing is off the player number is set relative to the paragraph style for staff labels, centered for this case.

I understand that this has to do with condensing, there is a “Violoncell und Bass” staff at the bottom I would like to condense, but retain separate parts for, while leaving everything else uncondensensed.

Even when I insert a manual condensing change and tell Dorico to not condense these staves (Flutes, Oboes) the player number does not return to its uncondensed position.

Any fix for this, or is this unexpected behavior?

I am not clear how the image reflects your question above it; I cannot see the lower strings.

Are you really asking two separate questions,

  1. text positioning and
  2. condensing the Cello an Bass lines?

One should be able to prevent any instrument combinations from condensing. Condensing is not an all-or-nothing proposition.

May be it has to do with the fact that the violins are section players in your score and the winds are not. Or have you edited the names of the Violin players to “Violine I” and “Violine II”?
Best would be to name them “Violine” and “Violine” and let Dorico do the numbering.

In Library > Engraving Options > Staff Labels > Numbering, you could set the Staff labels for identical adjacent instruments held by single and section players to Group between staves to get this:

Thank you everybody for your replies, and happy new year! I was out of town the past few days, so I apologize for my late response.

I think I was unclear in my first post.

What I was trying to do, in order to achieve my desired effect (keep player numbers centered along with the staff label), was to enable condensing and then create a manual condensing change for the instruments that I didn’t want condensed (flutes and oboes).

(It is more noticeable in the flutes, but note how the player number is justified right, while the staff label is justified center).

This resulted in section player player numbers being justified center, and individual player player numbers being justified right for some reason.

The solution I found was that a manual condensing change was not enough. I had to exclude those groups from condensing in Layout Options. This resulted in the desired effect.

(Notice here how the player number is now correctly justified center with the staff label.)

I can’t understand why this behavior occurs, but it shows that the global override in Layout Options handles certain things that are not handled by the Manual Condensing Change.
