I get distortion if I record above minus 5 db in Cubase. I use an Audient ID14 mk II audio interface, and when the Audient software shows -1 db, Cubase shows -6 db, see screenshot. In Reaper the volume matches Audient, see screenshot.
Hi,
How is the Stereo Out set up?
When I tested this, the audio track went directly to the Stereo out, (and via the Control Room to the monitors). Screenshot attached.

Hi,
How is the Control Room set up then, please?
Btw, maybe I’m missing something, but on the Reaper screenshot, I can see the very same signal level (distortion) on the iD Mixer, which I can see on the Cubase screenshot.
See screenshot of Control Room. This was an old setup from another audio interface, but the outputs on the Audient are not connected. I changed stereo out, removed Control Room, but the problem is still there, see screenshot. (I have another interface connected to the PC (but not Cubase). When testing I have used sound from an external synth via this sound card and to the monitors.) It is difficult to see the volume meter in the Audient mixer. But at the bottom of the meter on the left in the mixer it says -1 in the screenshot where Cubase shows -6.5, and -5 where Reaper shows -5.7. (This mixer has 0 dB as peak level.)

Hi,
Are there any plug-ins involved in the Monitor Bus? How is the Control Room Level knob set?
Hi,
Set the onitor Level to 0.00dB, please.
Sorry, I don’t know the internal routing of Audient… What exactly does the DAW 1+2 mean? I can also see the Cue bus (Til Audient) in your Control Room. This is probably routed to the Audient 5/6. How do Audient 3/4 and 5/6 fit with DAW 1+2?
I have set the monitor to 0 db.
The Audient software has 6 Daw Return channels to set up cue mixes and sends to hardware
outboard gear.
I have now set the faders in the Audioent mixer all the way down, disabled Control Room and Stereo out is disconnected from the interface.
The Audient mixer still shows -11 db, and Cubase -15.4 db, screen shot.
Hi,
Now, you are talking about Input, not Output, anymore, right?
Now we have to know how the Input Bus is set up in Cubase.
I think this is because it’s a mono input bus and you are feeding it into a stereo track at which point pan law is bringing the level down.
Thanks for your dedication and good suggestion. Unfortunately this doesn’t seem to solve the problem. See the screenshot where I’m testing with a mono channel.
I’ve also asked Audient support about this. According to them the reading in the Audient software is in dBFS so it should always be the same as the DAW reading unless the DAW meter is showing RMS level or the signal is being attenuated elsewhere.
Did it make some difference? I can’t see numbers on these screencaps so they don’t tell me much.
If I create a stereo and a mono track, feed them both from the same mono bus, the stereo track definitely meters lower. Isn’t yours the same?
Well you haven’t shown the input channel in any screencap…that’s where it could be being attenuated (though I think this is unlikely as you would need to have lowered the fader yourself)
You put me on the trail of the solution. And it was embarrassingly simple. I overlooked the fact that the input channels also have a standard pre-gain setting of -4.1 dB.
Pre gain setting defaults to 0dB. Always.
Unless you save a new default setting here:
Is this possible for pre-gain as well? Didn’t realize that.
Yes. It saves the whole pre section to a new default. High cut, low cut and gain.
You can do the same for the channel EQ as well.
I know it for the channel.
