Information update: new video engine development

It has been stated here that Steinberg has this as a TOP priority and will be working away on it as expeditiously as possible. I am confident they will be releasing it soon (next few months). The one thing they CANNOT afford to do is release it prematurely and break the ability to view video in a variety of formats without glitches. Too many post-audio houses and film composers rely on this for them to ship it in a broken or seriously buggy state. Many pro audio and pro video applications are going through the same process as Steinberg in replacing the video engine in their apps. It is no small task by any measure and it has to be done right the first time.

The solution we have at the moment works and many post people are living with this same issue in different apps, not just Nuendo.

Maybe Steinberg can license their new engine out to other software companies…

Maybe they will leave the old video engine/Nuendo version intact, so that you can choose to work with the new or old engine (if you do not uninstall Quicktime libraries that is of course…)

We’re getting close to release date, Q1 is almost over.

Waiting to see if this new video engine works flawlessly. I had so many problems in the past with the old engine as far as compatibility with different video format goes. I think this a major fix to Cubase and it’s about time they address the issue. Why not have an agreement with a company that did the VLC player?

I didn’t upgrade to Cubase pro 9 mainly because of this too.

Dan

Hello,

as stated in another Thread, the video engine will be released in Q2 due to some
license clarifications we are working on at the moment.

Thanks,
Timo

How much did this all affect regular Cubase development time? Can we still expect a big update for 9.5?

This IS a regular and long time due Cubase development ! Good to hear they are working on this and make sure everything is working perfectly!

Thank’s Timo!

If you consider a regular situation being the US Government telling us to uninstall a Cubase dependency and Steinberg having to replace it asap.

Either way, it’s not development for the next version specifically but for 8.5 and 9, so it’s a valid question to ask what it means for development of 9.5

Probably a better video engine…we hope!

It’s weird though that it takes the US government to ask people to do things about their video engine ??? It doesn’t make much sense, in my opinion.

That will also be for 8.5 and 9, not exclusively in a 9.5 update.

I’m talking about this: Apple Ends Support for QuickTime for Windows; New Vulnerabilities Announced | CISA

… apparently not, according to this in the C8.5 forum: Cubase Pro/Artist updates 8.5.30 available
Unfortunately the schedule as described by Timo Wildenhain and the goal to have the new engine in Q1 2017 could not be realised and hence the new video engine did not make it into the final maintenance update of 8.5”.

Oh, that’s actually a pretty bad broken promise for those who depend on video. Still it’s not developed for the 9.5 update so I want to know how it impacts that.

You are evaluating the legal side of using ffmpeg?
Now I am worried if it will ever be released.

Thanks for the update Timo and good to hear we are getting close!

No. It’s just that some codecs aren’t open source, so there needs to be an agreement before you can include them.

Fredo

FYI

I’ve come across a post by Guillermo, that hints to having the video engine update as a separate installer.

Any comments on this SB ?

That would make sense since it’s external files that need to be changed. That gives more hope that the promise isn’t broken.

According to this press release we are now talking about June…

Note that they’re talking about the next Nuendo upgrade (7.5 or 8), the video engine update for Nuendo 7 may still be released earlier.
