Inputting rests manually

Just switched from Finale and love Dorico. It is really fast for inputting notes with midi keyboard as I am used to do. However When I have to input rests the easiest and probably fastest way to do in Dorico is to move the caret but I find that it can be alittle confusing since you have to check the rythmical grid and be sure you have landed on the right place in the grid. In Finale You could just press the notevalue num keys. (That was one of the few faster things in Finale) Is it something to consider to have a similar option in Dorico?

When I want to input a rest, I press the key for the note value and then press the spacebar. That moves the caret forward by the note value that was selected.

Thank you, I’m aware of this function. Can be helpful sometimes

I use it all the time. Basically, pressing the spacebar is instead of pressing a key on the MIDI keyboard, but it gives a rest instead of a note. If I need a rest of a particular duration (overriding whatever grouping options are in place), I use Force Duration.

You just get used to placing the caret where you want the notes to start - wherever it is in any bar, doesn’t matter - Dorico looks after the rest (sorry about the silly pun there)

Sorry, I was a little too quick in replying you, I didn’t read your reply right the first time. It is a really great tip of you, xactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

The tip of StevenJones01 Really helped. Strange I havent seen this in any dorico videos or the help file.

I mentioned somewhere else that I have made a second key command for Advance caret and mapped it to my 0 key on the Num pad.

I just select the duration and tap it with my thumb - no spacebar necessary.

That’s OK. I have done the same many times. In my case, I don’t know whether it is best described as “Can’t see the wood for the trees” or simply “Eyes that don’t see”.
