Insert a measure with different time signature

Hello.
Having trouble inserting measures with a different time signature. I had a series of 7/8 measures. Wanted to insert a 3/8 measure. When I tried this, it moved all of the following music over as if subsequent measures were now in 3/8. Tried adding 7/8 to the measure after the 3/8, but that didn’t help. Can you advise please?

What did you expect would happen? If you change a time signature, Dorico will try to re-notate everything after according to that time signature. If you want to go back to 7/8, just add a 7/8 time signature.

There are a few different ways to go about this. Here’s one:

  1. Use the Bars popover to insert 3 eighth notes where you want the 3/8 bar
  2. Select the 4th eighth note and change the meter to 7/8
  3. Select the first inserted eighth note and change the meter to 3/8

Here’s another method, which avoids having everything get rebeamed and then fixed.

  1. Insert a measure
  2. Add a 7/8 time sig after the inserted measure
  3. Delete four eighth notes from the inserted measure
  4. Change the time sig on the inserted measure to 3/8

Thanks, I see that will work. Shouldn’t there be a way to insert a new measure, and change the time signature without affecting the next measures (that are already in a different time signature? Guess I’m used to Finale where you can add a measure, and specify the time signature is for JUST that measure.

Guess I’m a little confused. Seems like it should be so simple. Here’s a screenshot if that helps of a similar situation. Here in m. 98, I wanted to change that measure to 4/4 and add an eighth note. Clicked on the first note of that measure, went to shift-M and typed in 4/4. Time sig is now 4/4 but when I try to add an eighth note, all that’s available are still 7 eighths. So, the measure is STILL in 7/8 even though I changed it to 4/4. Help?

In Dorico, an inserted time signature takes effect until the next time signature or the end of the flow.

Finale was generally oriented towards measures; Dorico is more oriented towards beats. There are 7 eighth notes between the barline of m.98 and the barline of m.99. If you tell Dorico that you want to put a 4/4 time signature in m.98, it will be happy to do so – but there are still only 7 eighth notes between those barlines.

If you want Dorico to also add an eighth note, then turn on Insert mode (I, or the Insert icon in the toolstrip on the left) before changing the time signature in m.98 to 4/4.

One can add an eighth note to the incomplete 4/4 measure by setting the caret where you want it in the measure and using SHIFT + B followed by 1e to add space for one eighth note at that location.
