Insert hyphen to split word syllables

How do we break a word up and nudge along the existing words?
Example given- i want to make the “Donald” in old macdonald into Mac-Don-ald (see screen shot) and move “had a farm” later by one note to fit the notation. When i attempt it makes no change when insert hyphen within the word or if i delete “nald”, insert hyphen then continue typing it writes over “had” and i end up with “old mac-don-ald a farm”

thanks

I wish there were a good way. There isn’t.

You can cut-paste the lyrics after, but that isn’t great. Best to delete and redo.

thanks for the reply. Thats what i found in some other posts. I wondered if there had been a development with this.
Perhaps using “insert” mode, like with notation could be a consideration.
Perhaps each word is linked to the note so moving words would affect the notation too and therefore not an easy/quick fix for the developers?

Yes, I would love this as well.

You can enter the Edit Lyric window and add the hyphen – but you’ll need to delete “farm”. But at least you’ll only lose one syllable on the end.

Finale did that automatically, as well as Shift Lyrics Left/Right. Is a similar ability planned for Dorico?

You can do this in Dorico:
→ select “had a farm”
→ press the alt-key and hold it down
→ use your arrow-keys to Shift Lyrics to your desired place.

Not exactly, though. If the syllables span rhythms that are not all the same duration, it won’t work.

Yes, the team are aware of the needs here.

Yes. And Sibelius too.
I’m confident that Dorico will soon improve this, along with many other points, often listed on this forum. (around June/July 2025 ? I’ll take bets on it !)

The difference is that Dorico assigns syllables (after entering them on notes) to a beat, so they do not “remember” the note they were assigned to.
