Inserting a text under a music page

Hello
I join a Finale rendering of a song. The music is upside the page and down side the text
When I converted to Dorico 6 , I received a somewhat chaotic result. The music is nicely presented over the page but the text ‘frame’ is over the end of the music.
i know that I should insert a ‘Text Frame’ somewhere (?) in the page and tried to do it.
I prefer to use the automatic parametric layout possibilities of Dorico rather than moving the staves with the mouse. My objective is to render a age similar to the Finale page: music up, text down.

  • Text Frames:, automatic insertion: When you input a Text Frame in a page of music, can the text frame automatically insert into the music pushing the staves around, or do you have first to arrange the staves in order to create a blank space to insert the Text Frame?
  • Shortening the ‘music’ space: what is the best procedure to shorten the space occupied by the music staves over a page? I know that you can push manually the staves in the ENGRAVE mode, but is there a ‘CHANGE TO MINIMUM STAVE SPACE’ parametric procedure for the page layouts
  • Inserting two Text Frames or using tow columns in one Text Frame?: In fact I shall need two Text frames inserted side wise. I guess there is not a ‘column’ available in formatting Text Frames.
  • Thank you for the help.

What most folks will tell you is that in Dorico, special formats are best handled through layout and page template changes. Here is an altered version of your file with changes transferred to the First Page Template followed by some alterations in the page layout.

Notice how your text has been moved to text fields in the Page Template attached to the bottom of the page. (The page that you actually see is the right-hand template since this is a single, initial page.) If you had multiple pages of this type, I would likely have altered the Default Page Template as well and probably fed your text into the fields via the File > Project Info boxes.

I also gave your page a time signature (which can be hidden) rather than using unmeasured bars (I deleted) likely generated if you imported the original material via XML.

I kept your System Breaks, although I might have tried eliminating them and seeing if I could alter the note spacing to generate what you have.

If you try to replicate the title material, you will have to change the Page Template again to fit all the material there.

Text frames have no knowledge of surrounding music, or vice versa, there’s no automatic way to stop them from overlapping. Staff Text and System Text do have collision avoidance, but those attach to a specific point in the music, not a location on a page.

There are various ways to do that. In the Staff Spacing tool of Engrave mode, hold Alt/Opt while dragging a staff to compress the spacing between all staves equally. Or change the height of the music frame, either as a locall override or by adjusting the Page Template. The second one will only work on a page that has no override though.
The most Dorico-ish way is to go to Layout Options > Vertical Spacing and adjust the Justify distance between staves and systems when frame is at least value upwards. However, that will also not directly work here because the vertical fullness of the frame with all the lyrics and added text is already over 100%, as you can see in the bottom left of the page in Engrave mode.

Indeed, text frames are limited to one column each.

Please find attached a reproduction of your Finale example. Most of it was achieved by editing the Page Template.

Thank you so much hrnbouma
I read your detailed answer and shall study in detail.
There is a problem, I cannot open your file into my Dorico 6; Dorico says: Error Invalid Parameter
Maybe a problem somewhere
Thank you for your help
Daniel

Thank you Derrek for your detailes explanation
I shall study that
The thing is that my Dorico 6 doesnt want to open your file. It says: Invalid Prameters
Too bad
Thank you for the help
Daniel

How are you trying to open the files? Are you opening Dorico first and then using the Dorico open command, or are you double-clicking on the file before opening Dorico? Have our files downloaded to a folder with restricted access?

I’m not sure why the files from @hrnbouma and myself are both giving your system difficulty.

I made a mistake. I dragged them dirctly in a folder. Now I downloaded them then saved and now I can open in Dorico. THank you.

You have marked this as the solution, but that is only the solution to downloading files with your browser. Not the solution to your original post. That makes it a bit confusing to people encountering this thread. (As you see, the solution is now included with the original post so that people with a similar problem can easily find the answer.)

Could you please instead mark a post that helped you with the topic of the thread as the solution (either Derrek or hboumna)?

Tnks for observing Rikard. I corrected
