After updating Halion Sonic to 7.5, my download assistant is telling me to Install Missing VST Sounds to the tune of 26.53 GB. This has happened before. Is this a bug in SDA?
I’ve seen that and could never figure out what content was missing, so I installed it, then looked in the Library Manager and deleted the stuff I didn’t actually need.
Equally wondering here why I have to download another 30.34GB “Content HALion 7” when it was already installed.
I’m not installing 25GB of something I don’t know until Steinberg says if it’s necessary or not. I had another thread just like one on Dorico last year and it was a bug.
I assumed (maybe wrongfully) that the Content for HALion 7 were updated patches to support MPE in 7.5?
And since there doesn’t seem to be a thing like versioning for .vstsound …
I was also prompted for this today (9 GB in my case). I’ll skip installing this until there’s some clarification from Steinberg what this actually is.
I took advantage of the current promotion to upgrade my Halion 6 to 7, and it prompted me to dowload the 30Gb file. On installation it doesn’t appear to have added anything to the existing Halion Sonic sounds?
Not a problem for me with an ultra fast broadband, but a real PITA for most with regular breadband speeds.

Sure, these downloads are huge, and yes, it would be nice to know officially from Steinberg why they are required, but unless someone is on a metered internet connection and paying by the megabyte, I’m not sure what the problem is here … do people not trust the Steinberg Download Manager to know what’s needed?
I think I’ve have multiple of those “VST Sounds” updates which don’t add anything new over the course of a week, but this is the first one which claims to be an install for “Missing Sounds.” And none of them have any release notes. Only the software does.
Several reasons:
- nothing was missing a few days ago, so why is it missing now?
- How do I know that it’s not installing something I don’t want (since it tells me nothing about what’s actually “missing or why”?.
- 20+ GB of new content is not trivial.
There is something suspicious about this message.
I have an update on mine. After downloading the “Install Missing VST Sounds” update, it added extra instruments to my Halion Sonic library which I don’t have licenses for.
Essentially, it added:
- Auron
- B-Box
- The Halion Sonic library (Which is not the same as “Sonic Selection,” which is a curated selection of the former)
- Model C
- Trium
- Voltage
- World Instruments
- World Percussion
- Haliotron (It shows on the library manager but not on Halion)
What gives? I also received a smaller update for Groove Agent which is listed as part of my Cubase Elements install and that also adds kits I don’t have licenses for.
Because you updated to HALion Sonic 7.5?
I updated HALion to 7.5 and got “Content HALion” update offered, which I installed, but I didn’t get any message like “Missing VST Sounds”.
… and that definitely sounds like an issue. I have a full HALion license, so I can’t check the issue @BrunoDSL is having.
There was also an update to the Steinberg Library Manager, don’t know if that matters, my version is 3.2.80.
Just to be clear, my rig is working fine so far, I’m just trying make suggestions.
I’m curious too. Mine was the 9GB download. I installed it just cause why wouldn’t I.
Did notice in the list was Halion 7, but I don’t have the full version so that’s probaby why mine was only the 9GB.
Also had the Steinberg Classics in there. If this is about MPE I can’t wait to try it on my NI S61 Mk3.
I’m gonna also point out that version 7.5 of Halion was already installed on my machine before these updates started happening.
