Installing Dorico 5 on an External Drive

I’m trying out the free trial for Dorico Pro 5.
I have a MacBook Pro with limited SSD space, but plenty of space on an external drive.
What is the best way to install on the external drive?
I set the target folder to the external drive, but all the application files were saved on the internal drive. I tried to click on the external drive during installation, but it did not allow it.

I ended up simply moving everything from the Application folder to the external drive. It runs, but it is slow and buggy.

Is there a better way? It may be the slowness and bugginess are caused by other things.

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the forum @velcro!

I guess changing the Target folder in the Steinberg Download Assistant would be a good start? Not sure what to do after that, sorry…

I would strongly advise against doing this.

I think the best thing would be to install Dorico Pro 5 in the internal SSD (takes less than 1 GB) and all Audio Units on the external SSD.
Or use NotePerformer, also less than 1 GB.

If you don’t have 2 spare GB, then I would perform some Spring cleaning on that machine  !

The application itself is only 850 Mb. It’s the audio samples that are the real bulk. You can move these using the Steinberg Library Manager.

I know 256 GB is not much; and I’d recommend keeping at least 50Gb free…! :astonished:

Which MacBook do you have? Simply moving the app should not make it slower.

I moved the apps back to the Applications folder, and it seems to be better.
Thanks for the help!

I’m new to Dorico from Finale. I need to run my VST content from an External SSD. I have installed the actual VST on my Mac HD and used the Library Manager to move the Sound Content to the External SSD. When I start Dorico it tells me there are no VSTs available on my system. I read all of the Forum posts, searched out tutorials on other sites and watched almost every video out there. I’m stuck. Please advise.
Thanks in advance!
