I’ve just spent five hours (slow rural Scottish broadband) downloading Dorico 5 Pro to install on Mac OS 10.14.6, but the installer tells me I must have OS 10.15. Is there an easy way round this without up-dating the OS? (I’m currently a Finale user).
What Mac are you using, if I may ask? macOS 10.14 is now 5 generations—soon 6—old, and has many technical flaws especially in early APFS.
Do you have any other software or plugin that requires you to keep on 10.14?
If you don’t want to update to the latest, which I totally understand, may I suggest macOS 12 Monterey? It’s one of the best and most stable recent versions. My older 2016 MacBook Pro stopped there, and it is still great.
Welcome to the forum, @DavidWard!
I was momentarily confused by your thread title (“Mac OS 14”), which is actually the current version (well, 14.6.1). You might want to edit the name to make sure everyone understands.
Welcome, David!
Yes, you’ll need to install Catalina. Be aware that any old 32-bit software you still rely on will no longer work; and you’ll need to find alternatives for those.
It’s a harsh day for the realities of the transience of software.
Apparently the latest I can install on my early 2015 MacBook is Big Sur 10.11.7. I’m currently trying to download it, but it tells me that will take several days (how true, I don’t know). I’m due to be spending 6 weeks in London in the autumn, so that might be when to download it. My desktop Mac is even older. No doubt I should up-date everything, but I’m old (83) etc etc etc.
Corrected, many thanks.
You could also try both ways on two different machines and see which download wins!
My sources say that Early 2015 MBPs should be able to download Monterey (v12). They ditched the “10 dot” with Big Sur, which became v.11.
But yes, Big Sur will do for now.
Yes, better wait for a more stable connection to do all the updates.
In theory, if you have a good mobile phone plan with tethering enabled, it may be much better than a bad homeline.
That’s what we do in rural parts of Italy where there’s no way a fibre connection will ever come.
