I need a Conductor’s score to contain 3 Trumpet parts (among others). I want the 1st Trumpet part to always appear on its own line and have “(solo)” indicated below the name. And the 2nd and 3rd Trumpet parts to condense together on the same line. It should look roughly like this:
Trumpet in Bb 1
(solo)
Trumpets in Bb 2 3 (with the 3 under the 2)
Is this beyond the scope of Dorico? I’ve tried creating custom groups and using the “soloist” option, but nothing works. If I try to customize the instrument names the instrument numbering and condensing stops working.
I’m one of the users who’s been forced to Dorico due to the discontinuation of Finale and am battling with this program to accomplish even the most basic of tasks. I’m willing to embrace a new program but it’s so frustratingly complex. Is there an emotional support group for former Finale user’s?
Also, Dorico is showing brackets at the beginning of condensed lines when it shouldn’t be (for example when it condenses the two Clarinet parts into one line it shows a bracket in front of the one staff with Clarinet in Bb 1 2). How do you stop it from doing that?
Except for the solo indication in the instrument this is a standard condensing option using one custom group for Trumpet 2 and 3 defined in the layout options. It would look like this
To get the first one with the indication (solo) you have the change to name of the instrument in the setup. Once you do this 2 becomes 1 and 3 becomes 2. So you also have to rename those in Trumpet 2 and Trumpet 3. Then it looks like this
@mavros - So, it didn’t quite work. I tried to add a screenshot to this post but it just shows a bunch of code. So, I guess now I need to know how to upload a screenshot to the forum because dragging-and-dropping doesn’t appear to work nor does the upload button.
My results didn’t end up looking like your results.
You have to upload the screenshot file using the line with the arrow it is the 7th button from the left. If that does not work something might not be correct with your Mac or PC as that works perfectly well. Maybe restart.
You can also just copy and paste directly - that’s what I find quickest and easiest. Copy your screenshot, then paste into the post. It will be pasted to the location of the cursor.
Thank you all for being patient with me, I didn’t realize I needed to be looking at 2 screens when posting. I really am trying my best to get on board with an entirely new way of creating scores after doing it (more or less) the same way for the past 35 years.
@mavros - Here’s what I got when I tried to follow your instructions:
As you can see, it’s close. The word “(solo)” should be below “Trumpet in Bb” and ideally it would say “Trumpet in Bb 1” because this instrument will sometimes play as a part of the section and sometimes as a soloist. And the instrument numbers for Trumpets 2 and 3 are in the wrong place. They should come after the “in Bb”. I couldn’t find anywhere to modify or specify how Dorico formats instrument names.
I was going to post screenshots of the settings I entered, but the website says I’m not allowed to include more than 1 image. So, I’ll have to make 2 more posts after this one with the screenshots of the settings.
Any thoughts on how to get this cleaned up? Thank you again for your help and patience.
welcome to the community!
So, the good news is, that it is possible to achieve what you want. The bad news is, that it’s quite a workaround. Or at least I couldn’t think of an easier solution.
Step-by-step guide:
Make sure that you have 4 (instead of 3) trumpets added to your project (one acts as a dummy for numbering in condensing)
In setup mode select your flow (or all flows) in the bottom panel and uncheck the first trumpet in the left panel
Rename the second trumpet to
“Trumpet in B♭ 1
(solo)”.
Afaik you can’t insert music symbols (the b flat) directly in the instrument name popup, so I’d suggest just copying from above. Set “Show transposition” to “never”:
The 3rd and the 4th Trumpet will now automatically be displayed as “Trumpet in B♭ 2” and “Trumpet in B♭ 3”
Check your Layout options (cmd-shift-L) → Staves and Systems → Staff labels and make sure that the options under “pitch and transposition” are as you want them:
In Layout options → players → condensing make sure to add a custom condensing group with Trumpet 2 and Trumpet 3
Hope this helps. Let me know if it worked
Edit: In case you have renamed trumpets 2 & 3 already as was suggested in this thread before, you should undo this. The numbers of Trumpets 2 and 3 should not be part of the instrument name for this workaround to work. Instead we’ll let Dorico handle the numbering here
By default Dorico will number it “2.3” if it’s only one voice (e.g. an a2 line) and stack the numbers if it’s two separate voices. The option above makes sure, that it’s always stacked.
PS: Usually you should be able to include as many screenshots as you like in one post… not sure what’s going on here
