Instrument Tracks Inexplicably Linked

Hi all. I’ve been searching online and on the forums and I can’t find anything about this issue.
I’m working on a orchestral project with VST instrument tracks. I imported bunch of MIDI tracks as an XML file from another project. But some of the tracks are “linked” (I don’t know the technical term) such that ANY splicing, gluing, cutting, pasting, or moving of one track happens to one or more other tracks. I didn’t link them on purpose. They are NOT in group tracks. When I click on any one of those tracks to go into the key editor, ALL the “linked” tracks open in the editor, which is VERY annoying. The mixing parameters aren’t linked, I can adjust levels, pan, sends, separately as normal.
It’s extremely difficult to edit those tracks! :imp: I’ve tried adjusting every setting I can think of. I went into the mixer, and they weren’t linked, but I linked and unlinked them any way. Is there some sort of MIDI or Instrument Track link or grouping I’m not aware of?
Thanks for any suggestions.

No idea as to what could be the source of your problem. Try creating brand new Tracks out of these ‘linked’ Tracks - either by Render In Place or Exporting to Audio and then Importing.

Hi and welcome,

I can imagine 2 possibilities:
A) The MIDI Parts are Grouped. Then you would see a small 3 lines in the right-top corner of the MIDI Parts. To Ungroup them, use Edit > Ungroup (Ctrl/Cmd+U) command.

B) These are shared copy. Then you would see a small = icon in the right-top corner of the MIDI Parts. To change it, select Switch to Real Copy (I don’t know the exact menu now, probably Edit, somewhere).

A couple of times I’ve had issues with duplicated instrument tracks where they aren’t independent - they are totally linked! Like two copies of exactly the same track where they remain identical - no matter how you try to change one, the other follows identically. I wonder if this is a related issue?

Yes this sounds very similar to what I’m experiencing.
The tracks are not Grouped or Shared Copy as near as I can tell. There are no icons in the top-right corner of the parts.
I’ll try the suggestions that were given.
Thanks

Did you figure this out im having same issue

I never did figure out the issue. This happened with MIDI events that I imported from another project, so I assume they are somehow linked in Cubase’s mind. I just found ways to work around it.

Hi, replying 2022 as per Cubase Pro 12.
I came across this very issue after having duplicated an Instrument track. In my case, the MIDI linkage was actually due to the folder track both of the Instrument tracks resided in: When inside a folder track with the ‘Group Editing’ button activated, the problem was reproduced. Not sure if this was a relevant answer back in 2019, though.

For me, that was relevant, you solved it! Thanks from 2023!

Thanks, I think it was group editing that spooked this in my case too (although for some reason it only applied to some of the events)!!! thanks
