Interesting development from Nektar... CC121 part II.?

@Tim_Chandler Sounds amazing thanks for the quikc reply and also, since the firware was just released, is it safe to order a unit now or should I wait till the official announcment and final testing?

It’s all good we put the release out to get it to some customers who have been patiently waiting throughout the development cycle. No major issues reported and of course anything that goes out as a public release goes through our testing first.

I just did a first round of testing. Looks really good. However, the fader does not work for me. If I move it, it jumps back to the position it started. If I move the fader on my Novation keyboard, the cs12 fader moves with it. all good there. Also tried to disconnect the keyboard to see if it would interfere somehow. But still the same result.

If the fader keeps jumping back to a start position that suggests automation value he as been written potentially. Maybe check that?

No automation data has been written. Tried it on a new empty project too

Ok, well then I’d suggest first check you’ve got the latest firmware in the cs12 unit (reinstall it) and if the problem persists contact support. I’m not able to check this out myself currently sorry.

Something else to check, engage the SELECT button. The fader then controls any parameter you click on. Also try SHIFT+AUTO to disable read.

Great work Tim!
Are there any plan to share your midi remote script to the community for learning and inspirational purposes?
If not I can fully understand, so no pressure…
Thanks, Emre

HI @Tim_Chandler I just received the CS12 controller and starting the prepare to use it in sessions.
I’ve been trying to find a way to configure Talkback on/off on one of the 4 assignable buttons and DIM mix on another one of those in the Nuendo/Cubase MIDI controller script.
Even though I’ve found the command and assigned it to the buttons, it still won’t work.
Is it possible to configure that into the factory CS12 script?

I will produce a video on customisation, but here’s some tips:

Any control on the right side of the display can be user-assigned via the MIDI Remote Mapping assistant. You must have the CHANNEL page active on CS12 to make custom assignments. The pages are then selected using the vertical row of buttons. There are 6 module pages (colored) and 2 user pages (grey). You can also override the buttons on the SENDS page as these are currently unused.

The MARKERS buttons M1:M10 are designed to allow cusomt keystroke assignments. You lose them as Marker access, but you can still access markers by holding down MARKERS and turning Data/Menu:

  1. Open the MIDI Remote Mapping Assistant.
  2. Select the Markers page from the drop down menu.
  3. Click on the relevant button in the CS12 graphic M1:M10.
  4. Select a key command from the functions browser and click ‘apply’.

Hope that helps!

Regarding the script itself, I’m afraid it’s obfuscated since the CS12 integration is a clear differentiator from the competition, plus a lot of operation comes from controlCore.

I’m not sure it will be very useful for learning purposes.

Hello,

So I’ve been using the CS12 for a while now and very happy with it……when it works.
Unfortunately it regularly loses the ability to control the inserts via the 12 knobs on the right.
Everything else works but insert controls are lost.
I have tried reinstalling, different cables, give it separate power, restarting ControlCore, restarting the script, off and on.
Sometimes there are two CS12’s in the lower zone MIDI remote .
This is on a Mac M2 pro , latest Cubase 14 Pro.
Any suggestions? @Tim_Chandler

Losing insert control - does it come back on restarting Cubase by any chance? There is a bug in v14.0.10 I reported to Steinberg some time ago, that will be fixed in the next Cubase update. Tends to happen if you are switching between projects a lot.

@Tim_Chandler Thanks so much for that! I managed to configure Talkback on one of the buttons from the assignable buttons on the bottom but it onlyh works if I tap twice. Is there a way to make it switch Tablkack on/off when tapping once? Also, Is it possible to also assign the Pan Knob to control the Control Room level? The current settings CS12 has is to control the master buss in Cubase but that’s not helpful since it changes the way it hits the summing plugins on the master buss, that’s why we use Control Room level. I thought maybe even configuring the Tempo Knob to control the control room level since it has a few options you can choose from but unfortunately conotrol room is not one of them.
Any advice on that?

Hi Tim,

Sometimes it comes back to live after a restart, but not always.
I can’t pinpoint what the trigger is.
Maybe this is off any use:

When I stop ControlCore to perform a reset like suggested in the manual, I would expect the connection to be lost with the CS12 unit.
Instead the green connection icon stays green in the display for quite some time,a couple of minutes.
Then after a while it will disappear and disconnect.

Hi Tim, I got the CS12 around one week ago and started to use it with Cubase 13 and 14 on Mac.
There’s one thing: The fader won’t write any automation.
It reads automation though. Also all the other knobs on the CS12 can write automation

So I’m super interested in finding a future replacement for my trust CC121. I have watched this thread with interest and I nearly pushed the button on buying a CS12 last week.

I paused though , when I read that the slider will act as the AI Knob - that seems weird and will have the slider jumping all over the place surely while I hover over various controls. Is that correct? Most things I want to control on Cubase via the AI Knob tend to be rotary controls, so mapping a rotary control would seem to make sense…

Anyone comment on the AI Knob function on the CS-12 with the new Cubase MIDI integration?

The pan knob will work as an AI knob to, together with the fader slider. You can temporarily switch off the motor in the fader slider, but you have to do it again when disconnecting the AI knob function.
Its a quick procedure though, I think it works fine. And I find it more and more useful to use the fader slider for adjustment, even on rotary controls.

Thanks for the suggestions, particularly regarding control room assignment options. This is exactly the kind of feedback I need!

Regarding issues, please set up support tickets in your account at www.Nektar tech.com so they can be investigated properly. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the lack of issues given this is new api technology for both Nektar and Steinberg :slightly_smiling_face:

One reported issue of the fader not controlling channel volume appears to be present in the Cubase German localised version. Switching to English addresses the issue. Of course this will get addressed in the next update which will be released in the next week or so.

Regarding the fader vs ai knob. We are using a different method to achieve a ‘click and control’ procedure rather than hover and control. I found the ai knob method unreliable particularly with instrument plugins and as has been pointed out earlier, it’s not ideal as you have to hover the mouse over a parameter to control it. Cs12 does not have such limitations.

In my case the „Open Plugin“-button works in Cubase 13 but in Cubase 14 there is no reaction (Mac silicon m1)

Hi Arik - I had this issue in 14 as well at first, but after reinstalling the control core installer, it is fixed and now works as expected.
