Introducing Dorico for iPad, available now

Thanks for making this I was waiting for this for so long!

Will there be support for microtonal scales anytime soon?

+1. In the past I tried several ipad notation apps but until Dorico for iPad, none felt useable and efficient for more than minimal tasks. I spent some time yesterday puttering around with Dorico for iPad and entering a short Bach piece for keyboard and was delighted to find that it was very fast and efficient and for users of Dorico for Mac or Windows, a snap to learn. To me, this app seems to welcome in a whole new level of ability for writing music notation on a tablet. Hearty congratulations to Steinberg and the Dorico team!

sorry, I know I can input chords on keyboard but I want to hear them playing in play mode, thanks again

I tried using the app, on my iPad Pro 12.9, but it often crashes. For example, if you decide to import an xml file, after importing a window appears warning that the project can only be consulted and that the changes will be taken into consideration only after saving a new version of the project. So far, everything is ok, but the warning window no longer closes and the app needs to be restarted, but if you try to import an xml project again, it repeats itself. I noticed that the program also crashes when other warning windows appear on the screen. It would also be nice if the program worked with Apple Pencil, but this is another story; first you solve the problem mentioned above.
Cheers, Nunzio

Just got around to the View Options (the eye icon) - great idea here. I work in transposed score because my brain visually expects it that way even though it takes more cognition to work in, but it’s nice to be able to quick switch to concert pitch to check things too. That would be a great addition to the desktop.

This has not been my experience. I’ve been using Dorico on the iPadOS 15 beta for weeks. Can you say what issues you’re running into?

Developers can submit a request to Apple to allow their apps to access more RAM.

How very Byzantine.

I’m hoping for the same. Would love to be able to playback my microtonal comp. on the iPad for practicing.

What a fantastic surprise and how amazing to have everything available on my small iPad screen! Of course the Dorico pro on my Mac will remain the workhorse🧐

Less than that, if you are not using every month just pay $4 a month for the months you use the extended features and then use the free version to read the files the other months…

I decided to subscribe so I could see how the full instrument availability would work on my mini 4 Ipad. Very slow. But surprisingly, never crashes. At least not so far.

I know it’s not recommended for the Ipad mini 4, but found it usable with the 4 instruments. While it is still usable with the added 13 instruments, I don’t think most people would be happy staying with that.

I’m going to keep using it on the mini 4 for awhile. See if it ever crashes. I was surprised it didn’t.

One control is too small for me to work on the mini. that’s the onscreen tempo control. As far as I can tell you can’t expand the size of the tool bar, like you can with the score

I was on holidays, so I’m late to the party but… this is HUGE! I use my iPad everywhere, but there were some pro applications missing. I travel quite frequently across two countries, and I appreciate the possibility of leaving my laptop at home, which is quite heavy. For every trip I had to plan ahead which work could I do while abroad, and now one of my main pro apps is available for the iPad.
Thank you!!

I’m listening to the Scoring Notes podcast with @dspreadbury. The removal of the player limit is going to be the most opportune timing for me, since I’m working in a big orchestral project. So again, THANK YOU!

EDIT: BTW the Sibelius ad about unlimited players was very well placed within the Dorico episode… up until Daniel’s announcement crushed it.

Yes. I was expecting an increase, but still a limit. Unlimited players is awesome.

We have submitted an updated build of Dorico for iPad to Apple for their review, and hope that it will pass review in the next few days, so that we can release it early next week.

Thanks for that update, Daniel. I’ve just listened to the Scoring Notes podcast, very interesting, as usual. Congrats on this achievement!

Thanks @dspreadbury for the interview on scoring notes. I only started using Big Dorico on my Mac a few months ago, and already I’m convinced this is the way forward.

I still have a subscription with the other place for their ultimate version, but I’m keen to get my pupils using Wee Dorico (I think that’s what we’ll call it up north).

At the current subscription price it’s a complete bargain, and with your announcement of unlimited players it becomes even more appealing; and yes, I’d be happy to pay more to unlock more features.

I can see Dorico on the iPad becoming one of the most important tools not only for professional performers and teachers, but also for the huge number of music students. With the various options on iPad - free, signing in with Steinberg account, or the paid subscription - you’ve made that tool available to many more people.

Many thanks to you and all the Dorico team.

I’d love to be able to output through AirPlay.

But, what about us prefering the iPad before a Surface? (I have both) The battery time on the surface is terrible if compared to the iPad, so as far as mobility goes (very important to me) the iPad wins, as I am not required to have a power socket nearby for many hours. I don’t mind the subscription model, as I get an application which they roll out updates to and the price is increadibly low for what you get.

In fact most solutions go with a cloud/subscription based model nowadays. It ensures money keeps flowing in to the business to keep up development while there is still interest in an application. A one off payment means that you have to keep selling to more and more users, instead of focusing on giving the subscribers (current users) the best experience ever. This in order for the business to be sustainable.
