iPad as midi controller?

Simply put;

I don’t have a midi controller but I have an iPad. Can I use it as a midi controller into Cubase for my various vst instruments? I just want to use the iPad as touch screen piano roll and/or pads to program drums and piano parts for toontrack and halion sonic etc…

My setup
Windows 10 Pro (Desktop PC - NO WIFI)
Cubase Pro 9.5
iPad Pro 12.9 (2017)
AxeFx II XL+ (as my main interface)
UR242 (Secondary interface)

I was hoping midi over USB somehow and set it up as a midi device in Cubase so it doesn’t bother using the axefx as my interface. Any suggestions on connectors and apps to accomplish this? Thanks!

I don’t think you can do it over USB, especially on Windows. It may be possible on a Mac, I am not sure. There are several decent apps you could try for the iPad. I can’t think of any offhand, I have tried a couple of the free versions and they are OK. I have said before and I will say it again but I really can’t believe Steinberg hasn’t jumped all over this in iC Pro. If they added some MIDI controllers such sliders, knobs, XY pads, etc., and allowed assigning those to MIDI CCs, iC Pro would be great.
