Is Cubase SX compatible with Windows 8?

Installed Cubase SX on Windows 8 and now cannot use any Direct X plugins

Got a funny feeling I’m now going to have to go out and buy a new DAW!

Is SX compatible with Windows 8?

It depends on what you consider compatible. Since the last SX version was released in 2005, it is highly unlikely that it would be considered compatible with Windows 8 which was released sevan  years later. Strangely enough, SX is the officially stated software for conversion of older projects to newer versions of Cubase.

Can I drive a horse drawn buggy on the Interstate?

Well, in terms of converting older projects (that requires an SX installation) I can see why someone would want this.

I have some 300+ really old projects myself, that did not make an impression at the time, but I know some of them are music types that has become current again.

Anyways, it would be awesome if Steinberg created a conversion app for all older version projects into the latest version. This way I wouldn’t need an older computer installation or worry about older applications running on a new OS.

That’s a new one for me… I’ve always heard the other version:

What’s the difference between a Harley and a Hoover ? The Hoover has the dirt bag on the inside :open_mouth:

For one reason or another, none of my 2003 SX recordings work on my latest setup

Clearly you have some need to put forth your amateur psychoanalysis, along with a healthy dose of (not so) veiled insults.

I’m not even going to venture a guess at what that signifies. Probably an inferiority complex, but it’s not my area of expertise.

He was merely asserting the fact that SX can still get you results. I am pretty sure it wasn’t an analytical attempt at insulting anyone. If you’ve been here a while, you’d know that Steve’s a good guy.

You’re entitled to your own opinion. Just don’t try to promote it as fact. Thanks.

I know all about it, since I actually own both SX3 and Cubase 7 (among other titles). I also might be more familiar with Steve than you assume. Some people are using a cracked copy of SX3, because they’d rather steal from others what they’re too selfish to pay for. This doesn’t necessarily qualify them as “good guys”.

Everything is not what it appears to be. Appearances are for the dull witted to make superficial judgements.

Since you own one or more licenses for Cubase, it would appear you do not know all about it.

You certainly earn the title from the remainder of your account name.
(I.e. after “The B” in case it did not appear that way.)

SX3 will run on Windows 7 (and perhaps 8) but there may be a problem with the installer, so I find the best thing to do is install it on another XP computer, then just copy the “Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase SX 3” folder out, perhaps copying via CD/DVD or USB key, and drop it somewhere on your Windows 7/8 disk – it’ll work like a portable install, and you avoid problems caused by installing ancient Syncrosoft components. When I run it like this I can use it for converting old projects, then just delete the folder.

I’ve just checked and all the existing DirectX plugins are visible in SX3 so it might be some problem with doing a full install on Windows 8, which could be bypassed by doing what I describe above, but I don’t know how you’d register 32-bit DirectX DLLs on a 64-bit system. If you don’t have a newer version of Cubase, I’d suggest installing the latest eLicenser, then just drop the Cubase SX3 folder onto your Windows 8 PC.
