I’m considering buying Chroma Console but I was wondering if it was possible to create VST racks in Nuendo 13 to get a similar FX?
Obvs I’d want to map it permanently to my Midi Twister
I tried using Effects Rack from Soundotys which would have been absolutely perfect for the job considering how ST plugins sound but after some tries I’ve found out that, while mapping it works fine, once the rack is recalled, all the mapping is gone.
Specifically I’ve found out that, if a rack is recalled, all the plugins you previously added and mapped are not detected by the Remote Controller Editor anymore. In other words, it thinks the rack is empty.
Wonder if there’s another way to achieve that, which to be clear is:
a curated series of VST effects
I can permanently map it for good. (like having an actual Chroma Console hardware pedal)
Lots of ways to do this… but @MrSoundman is right about Blue Cat. Besides Patchwork, they also have a multiband hosting tool MB-7 Mixer which is great, and a few other very cool plugins that do hosting in other contexts. But I think Patchwork and MB-7 Mixer are the two for you to look at. Blue Cat's MB-7 Mixer - Multi Band Mixing Plug-in and VST/VST3/AU Host
My personal favorite of that kind of chainer is DDMF’s Metaplugin though, but they also have a simpler one called Superplugin, which has a streamlined workflow but is still very powerful, and you may prefer that one instead of Metaplugin. Metaplugin - DDMF Supreme Audio Software
There are more on the market which you can find with a search, and also more approaches to this workflow, but I think you’ll be happy with one of the above.
If you want to stick with one single developer/ecosystem, then don’t count out some other modular-type chaining plugins that can host their own modules/plugins inside their plugin host/chainer. There are several on the market. For example, Kilohearts Snap Heap and Multipass are both a joy to use IMO. If you like their modules called snapins (they have many that are free, but some really nice premium paid ones too), you can create some wildly fun stuff with great modulation and other features built in too. I am a huge fan of Kilohearts. Multipass is a creative powerhouse playground IMO. Love it. Kilohearts - Multipass
I will surely check MEtaplugin and eventually I’ve found a couple of alternatives such as Patchwork indeed but also - seems the most interesting - FreestyleFX (new company, apparently ran by the same guy who designed NI Machine)
Next, and most important focus is to permanently map these. Since we don’t want to be stuck with just 8 macros.
Funny enough me & my buddy were trying to do a permanent mapping again on the Effect Rack (soundtoys) and while I failed, my bud succeded. But we’re not sure why. Because I tried to replicate what he did and didn’t work on my end (he’s on Nuendo 12 and shares the same exact settings as mine)
We’re still digging.
So, to recap:
yes there are a bunch of options
we’re still stuck on the permanent mapping part
In case we succeed I’ll re-organize the info for whoever wants to do the same: create a virtual multi-FX “pedal” that’s always mapped. Like having a custom “Chroma Console” from Hologram.
When I am playing around with a guitar or keyboard (real one), I typically just use my DAW as a plugin rack. The good thing is, it does keep things in order, with the last presets I was using, and I can have many different combinations of effects, per channel. And just mute the ones I am not using. For example, the Chroma pedal, has 4 effects, so one could have 16 combinations in 16 channels or more in your DAW. All with the same input / outputs.
If you need only one to be active you can use the DAWs SOLO X / OR function, to solo only the one you need, and switch as needed.
And you do map your own effects rack?
that’s our only goal atm: recreating that nice HW hands-on workflow you have with Chroma Console on out MIDI Fighter Twister
oh that’s interesting: I’d love to know more about this in particular
a quick scenario:
you map 5 controls in Guitar Rig as you want to create a virtual pedal like Chroma Console (let’s name the FX rack Chroma Console from now on)
your goal is to use it as a send for all your tracks in the session
if you map Chroma Console using method 1 it will stay permanently mapped? Meaning that soon as you recall Chroma Console as a send, no matter the project, bum, everything is already mapped?
Do you map the send of each track permanently? (so in any project you can use those send mappings)
Dunno if it makes sense? XD
It would be super helpful if you could share a bullet point sequential list of actions to make sure I’m not missing any critical detail.
I truly want to learn mapping in Nuendo thru & thru.
Hi Coro,
I am quite busy right now, you can always experiment and see what happens with the different ideas and scenarios you are thinking about.
Have a great weekend!
