Is it possible to hide those grey boxes above the staff?

If so, it’s the System Track.

Alt(Opt)+T is the command to hide/show it.

If you want it to be hidden by default, you can open the View Options[1], switch it off and save as default.

I have it permanently turned off, and almost never use it.
