I have some bars where I would like to indicate rhythm slashes of: quarter, triplet, quarter, triplet. Is it possible to modify the rhythm slashes? All I can get it to show is four slashes. I’ve tried selecting slashes and pressing “;” to implement the triplet ratios but nothing happens.
Instead of using a slash region, go to note input and use Alt-Shift-V to create a new slash voice. You can then input whatever rhythms you want, just as you would input normal notes.
You can also break a slash region at any point, and move the end points if you want to insert a bar of a specific rhythm in the middle of a long slash region.
Brilliant, thanks!
I know this can be done, but it does not playback. Even though it allows me to make it look right, since it is a different voice, it cannot be heard in the playback, while a simple slash region does actually playback any underlying music. So I guess there is no way to have both MIDI playback AND Rhythmic Slash Notation in the same staff? I want slash notation that shows the rhythm (in certain places) but still will playback the underlying notes for reference.
If I read your request correctly, there’s no need for workarounds. The slash voice will playback as whichever pitch you inputted it as. The easiest way of achieving if this is by using a midi keyboard or converting the existing notes.
You might need to enable a setting in Playback settings to get slash voices to play back.
Thanks. I have not found a way to hide the notes. And do you mean I create a slash voice for the few bars I want this for, copy the actual notes into the slash voice first?
You have to be in Engrave mode - there you’ll find switches for hiding noteheads, stems and ledger lines in the Properties panel.
Not sure what you’re telling me. If I create a slash region, I still hear the underlying notes but it only gives me simple slash notation (no stems or rhythm) - this is fine most of the time, but sometimes I do want to specify the rhythm.
If I create a slash voice in the selected bars using Alt-Shift-V I get the exact appearance I want in the slash voice, or I can hear it in the original voice, but not both.
If I create a slash voice using Right-Click on selected bars, it changes the whole part, not just the selected bars, and still makes me choose between the look I want and playback.
Of course I could do option B above and use the actual notes for playback AND then switch voices to make the printed parts, but that’s pretty clumbsy.
Thanks for your thoughts. - JC
Oh, I’ll look for that next chance I get. Thanks.

Option #4 needs to go away.
Thank you - but you basically just list in better detail what I just said, and I still am not finding a way of having rhythmic slashes and still hearing the underlying notes (as a slash region does).
Thanks. That works if I take the staccato off the notes - otherwise the staccato dots show up twice for each slash after 1) copying the original voice over the slash voice 2) selection that region 3) switching to Engrave mode 4) hiding Ledgerlines, noteheads, stems and setting column index 0.
So Yes, the solution works, but it is so clunky I doubt that I will ever use it - I will just make my demo and switch voices to print the effected parts. This is one of very few things that was easy in Finale and practically impossible in Dorico.
Please put in a request for the next version that simply allows a “slash region” to have the option for “rhythmic slash notation” in addition to the default slash notation. Thank you.
One could always put the notes in a hidden staff and include the slash staff only for show.
Yes, I understand, my point was that the menu item Voices > Rhythmic Slashes needs to go away (or be hidden a little better…), since it is useful only in very special cases, but it’s usually the first thing that people try… ![]()
I’m sorry it didn’t help with your initial question!
B.
