It’s feature complete and would allow someone in this situation to review past projects and/or archives of previous work.
My view is and has always been that the “dongle” should be integral to the entire workings of Steinberg’ hard/software and allow project and other file storage, in addition to software protection and DSP functionalities in hardware.
I’ve been handed about 83 old projects done in Cubase SX3, with a view to ‘doing something’ with them… so the obvious first thing to try is to get a copy of Cubase SX3! (Just like if someone have given me them on some obsolete multitrack digital tape format, such as that Tascam one on Hi8 video, or an Akai ADAT format…)
It’s not unusual for backwards compatability to get broken in software applications (even if it’s only little things), so I wouldn’t automatically assume that Cubase 6 would be able to open these files.
I don’t really understand your attitude, to be honest - you seem to be railing against something or other, I am not sure what! (software piracy? that’s got nothing to do with this - I’m just working on archive material … and the projects are only about 4 or 5 years old, for goodnessakes!)
If the person who gave you the material would prefer, they can export it into Cubase XML format, which can be imported directly into Cubase 6 as an archive.
Cubase 6.x opens all nuendo codebase based Cubase projects, that is Cubase versions 1 to 6, SX 3 however is the last version that opened legacy Cubase projects (2.8 to VST 5.1) and that is the reason it is offered for download, the e-licenser allows you to run any prior version of Cubase BTW, I have for compatibility testing SL2, SX3, SE3 and 4 full all on one system for instance in addition to the 6.5 license

Hi I own Cubase 6.5 and recently downloaded the SX3 from the above mentioned ftp link for troubleshooting with some compatibility issues and understood that being a registered user of Cubase 6.5 I have the license to use SX3 as well. But I was wondering if Cubase 5 also will be possible to download?
Not that I know of, but if that was the version you originally purchased, you could contact Steinberg and ask. On the other hand, I can’t think of any reason you would want C5, seeing as you have a much better product in C6, which can directly load C5 projects.
Yes I know. But the studio I hire has Cubase sx3 and 5. Importing my track archive (not start to end individual wave tracks) created in 6 into sx3, had some issues. I must create new tracks and move these imported events to the new tracks for it to playback the sound. But if I import my midi track which hold tempo changes, sx 3 recognises and updates the tempo according to the midi.
Whereas in 5, these archive imported well without any problem and played the sound. But importing midi track didn’t update the tempo informations and changes which is a way big headache than just creating new tracks and moving in case of sx3.
That’s why I thought I could check installing 5 in my PC and try out.
It would still be worth asking Steinberg if it was OK for you to install from the C5 media, as your C6 license will allow you to run it. The studio should have the C5 installation media. You should explain your case (refer to this forum topic) as it is no longer possible to buy a new copy of C5 (at least, not to my knowledge), so you have no alternative. I’m sure the suggestion will be made that the studio should upgrade though …
On the other hand, what you describe (MIDI track archives not being imported with tempo changes into C5) might have a solution, so it’s still worth making the support call to Steinberg; that would probably have to be done by the studio as they presumably are the registered owners of C5.
I’d also suggest that you create a new topic called perhaps “C5 not importing C6 track archive MIDI tempo changes” in the relevant forum area … perhaps someone else who’s had this issue can help.
