This is admittedly dead cheeky, as it isn’t about Steinberg products directly! I have an aged Oxygen 88 keyboard (the Mk 1) and some of the faders have started to send out unwanted messgaes. Clearly they are on the way out. On Cubase, a channel suddenly increases volume unexpectedly etc. I have redone my Oxygen surface in Cubase, excluding the faders and all is good but I did like having the faders in the loop! As this is a forum where all sorts of configurations are talked about, I was wondering if anyone had had similar problems and has anyone actually replaced the faders in an M-audio Oxygen (?)
Hi,
Yes, I have seen several similar messages here on the forum with M-Audio keyboards.
Should be a simple fix with a potentiometer cleaner such as Kontakt PR.
H. I was advised that pot cleaner might lubricate the switch and nullify the resistance.
Nonsense. There are products specially formulated for use in potentiometers. Just don’t use WD-40
Hmm. I’ll check that out. To be honest I’ve never heard of Kontakt PR. Not sure if it’s available in the UK. Are there any suitable alternatives?
A couple of the sliders are giving me grief but the rest are probably in similar straits!
You should have no problem ordering it from the UK as it’s a Polish manufacturer. I remember the original “Kontakt” brand (no relation to the sampler!) was a German product, I’ve used it for years but eventually ran out of it, and found TermoPasty, who seem to have taken it over. It works, and in my experience, it’s safe, longterm, for use on both slider and rotary potentiometers.
One alternative is Caig F series, I haven’t tried it myself, and you might struggle to find it outside of the US (and it may also have a 200% tariff on it by now ). I remember SOS doing an article on this very subject years ago (Paul White?) recommending it. I tried getting it from StewMac but it would have been ridiculously expensive, not because of tariffs, but because of transport costs (UPS from the US as a hazardous material).
PS as a first option, you should be able to get an air duster locally, sometimes you just need to blow out the debris and work the slider (fader) a few times. No need to open up the device. If that doesn’t work, you can try Kontakt PR.
Thank you for this suggestion MrSoundman.
Yes, liquids from the USA have been problematic to get hold of since 9/11 but now I won’t even bother. (And that’s with everything else too!)
I’ll check out your suggestions and great that the Kontakt cleaner is European. (Still problematic sometimes because of Brexit!!!)
Thanks again for taking the time.
Cheers
Dan
