Is there a way to automatize a layer/vst mute within a part?

So far I haven’t been able to find a way to activate/deactivate a mute of a specific layer/vst instrument at a certain bar (i.e 1/2 bar before the end of the part) within a part. The part contain other layers/vst instruments that should not be affected. Is this possible at all?
Should you be wondering why… I have a delay effect on the strings that need to muted before the beginning of next part.

Don’t have the time to test this now, but it might work if you assign an action controller to that Layer Mute with input Virtual Midi x, and program an according controller change on a MIDI track which outputs to Virtual Midi x (x beeing the same as the action port).
