Is there standard setup for key commands on laptop use?

Hi,

Is there a standard or best practice for assigning key commands for laptop use? I’m especially looking for the main transport controls like Stop, Record, Cycle go to locators. I’ve mainly been working on a full size keyboard over the years and really missing the num pad when not.

I’m capable of inventing my own but it’s convenient to follow standard if they exist… (Also not liking to hide the most used commands behind advanced two hand combinations)

How do you do this?

Best regards,

Johannes

Not the actual answer to your question, but it is exactly why I have been carrying separate number pads around with me for decades. :sunglasses:

When I bought a laptop I made sure it includes a NumPad. Couldn’t work without it.

Yeah, I know… And I even try to learn how to work with the trackpad on my MBP like cool kids.

If you don’t need to stick to the standard, customization will overwhelmingly improve your workflow. For my recording laptop, I assign Record and other transport keys to the positions least prone to error while my finger is on the trackpad. Since recording mistakes are not permissible, I assign the Record function to multiple keys. Of course, this is slightly different from the key commands for editing, but thanks to the ability to save and load key command sets (often referred to as “Alt Keycommands” in some software), I’ve never felt it to be inconvenient for my work.
