Issue: Sluggish Performance When "Slipping Event Content" in Large Sessions (N14)

In large sessions with multiple episodes further down the timeline, I’m experiencing significant sluggishness when using “Slip Event Content” within a cue or moving event content with the mouse in Nuendo 14. However, opening the same session in Nuendo 13 it runs smoothly as expected.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

is it a project originally created in N13 ? if so, it could maybe be this causing the sluggishness.

It doesn’t seem to make a difference. I was working on a different TV show with only one episode further down the timeline, originally started in Nuendo 13, and it runs fine in Nuendo 14.

To test further, I revisited the session mentioned earlier and started removing episodes to see if performance improved. As I removed most of them, the sluggishness did decrease, suggesting that the number of episodes in the timeline is a factor.

Same here. Large sessions with lots of data on screen makes zooming veeeeery slow also (compared to N13)

With the latest Nuendo 14.030 update, it seems the issue with sluggish behavior when dragging or trimming audio events in very large sessions (such as TV series projects with multiple episodes on the timeline for reference) has been resolved, great improvement there.

However, trimming or adjusting cycle markers still remains very sluggish. I’m also noticing that video playback is occasionally choppy. I always use Avid DNxHD codecs, so this is consistent across large sessions.

Just to reiterate: when opening the exact same sessions in Nuendo 13.055, none of these issues occur.

I’m experiencing the same issue as you, even with the latest version. Working on a single TV episode (1hr) with lots of events. Extremely sluggish behavior when trimming clips and even worse when adjusting clip gain. Adjusting clip gain via shortcuts, on the clip fader or info line leads to a spinning beach ball which doesn’t resolve. I end up having to force quit.

I’m using quite a lot of ARA processes, but always make it permanent. Sluggishness is usually around the clips I process with ARA. Not sure if this process is leading to initiating Auto-Align leading to a beach ball as well. :downcast_face_with_sweat:

Are you still facing the issue or anyone else with the same problem?

I’m on an M4 Max MacBook Pro with 64GB RAM running Sequoia 15.4.

Adjusting clip gain with the mouse is almost impossible on large sessions as mentioned above. Unfortunately, I’ve had to go back to Nuendo 13 for handling bigger projects, as the latest version becomes too sluggish.

Yeah, quite an unfortunate bug. It works fine on some clips and then next scene bam, it just hangs. I’ve had to force quit Nuendo at least 10 times on 1 episode. Slows me down quite a bit. Maybe I’ll switch back to N13 from the next episode as well.

Can the staff/mods/steinberg team kindly look into this?! :face_with_bags_under_eyes:

I’ve tested this on a 12 core Mac, an i9 Mac, and an M1 Mac, every machine shows the same sluggish behavior on very large sessions

Ah, damn! I kind of incorporated the Adaptive Background Attenuation feature in N14 to my workflow for quick volume automation on the music tracks.

Will miss some of the new range tool features for ambience fill as well. :downcast_face_with_sweat:

agreed Markers are sluggish in N14 compared to 13 still

I still can’t figure out what causes the sluggishness. On a TV episode of 45mins with 70-80 tracks, trimming clips, clip gain etc. all get really sluggish sometimes. I’m using a lot of ARA and DOP. Move a couple of minutes ahead on the timeline and it seems to be fine again. It’s not like it lasts throughout the editing process.

On another project, 6-8 tracks with 1000’s of clips, duration of 12hrs it is buttery smooth throughout. Not a lot of plugins, just a record and edit job however.

I really hope Steinberg can look into this. It has been months since we paid for this update and running into this issue is a dealbreaker.

If you get rid of the ARA does it get better?

Ah, that’s the thing, I make all my ARA extensions permanent. I just leave a muted layer of my Spectralayers edit as backup on one track. But, there have been sessions where I remove those as well and still notice the issue.

Some ARA processes have been buggy with N14. Had frequent crashes with Auto-Align Post while loading the plugin on to the clips and with DynAssist, after making it permanent, it reverts back to showing the ARA logo on the clip again. I then just remove the extension and the processing stays.

@MattiasNYC Have you had any issues?

I only just started on N14. I’ve had jobs that I didn’t want to “risk” before switching so the first paid job I did on it was only today, though I bought it pretty close to release.

The only issue I’ve had so far is a really weird event selection issue, but no sluggishness so far (no big project yet though). The event selection issue is as follows:

Suppose you have a timeline with a bunch of events. You select events 10-15. Then you use CTRL (on Win) to deselect event 12. Then you reselect that event. Every now and then when I do that all of the later events on the timeline on that track get selected. Very strange.
