Issues and questions regarding score editor in Cubase 14

Hi there,

Just switched to Cubase 14 and the new score editor is beautiful. However I’m struggling with the followings issues :

  1. All lyrics created with C13 are gone, how to recover them ? I spend hours editing them, this is very annoying not to find them.
  2. How to link lyrics with notes ? When I move a note, the lyrics doesn’t, which is a real problem when composing a song for a musical as the lyrics are cues to changes and notes are constantly moving during the process of composing. So it’s not really an option to not have lyrics and to not be able to move the notes without the lyric they are attached.
  3. How to change the quantization during a song ? I have a part of a musical song that is swinged so I need a specific quantization for it and then I’ve part with straigh 8th so I need to be able to show also the doted 8th or tuplets for example but with the previous quantization it’s not possible. So how to do so ?
  4. How to define the number of bars line per line ? For exemple in a musical I need many space in a bar because a long text has to be written during a tacet and then I need small bars because nothing happens.
  5. How to add text zones between systems for stage direction or spoken text for example ?
  6. What happened to Crtl+mouse wheel to zoom in and out ? This was so useful !

Thanks for you help and advises

Hello @Charlus - first, try using the ‘score-editor’ filter at the top of the Cubase pages. The returning list of threads will be long.! However, all your above questions have (I reckon) been asked many times and answers posted. You’ll need to sift through them a bit.

If you then still need more specific help, ask away. I’d gently suggest separate threads per question is easily more manageable (and searchable.!), then one post that becomes a giant mix-up of answers to half a dozen different topics.

Its good to know a bit about your system details too. :slightly_smiling_face:

Good luck.!

Thanks for you answer.
Indeed I checked but I found mostly unanswered questions in the forum. Or just the fact that users have to deal with the way things are now. I’ll ask in separate posts though.
Best !

I can give a few quick cursory answers.

  1. Lyrics from previous projects don’t convert to the new lyrics, because they share a data structure with any text events and expression map-related technique text, and are therefor impossible to distinguish reliably.
  2. You’ll need to select them together with the notes and move them around in the Score Editor (or List Editor)
  3. You can create manual Display Quantize items via the toolbar. The forum should provide several threads on this topic.
  4. Look at the Layout Settings. Again, forum search will provide several discussions of this.
  5. You can create text events or system text events, however those won’t create larger zones between systems.
  6. Agreed, would be nice to implement that, it’s on our roadmap.

Thanks for your answer and precisions,

However regarding point 2 : I move notes from the midi editor when composing. I use the score for visual feedback as a sketch, so I really need to link lyrics with midi notes as before so that lyrics move also when notes are moved from the midi editor window. Is there a way to do so ?
I use Dorico for final scoring edition but to me Cubase is really for composing. I use both softwares, they have different purpose and to me it’s good if it remains this way.

I agree it would be nice if the key editor would move lyrics as well. We’ll consider how we can make this possible in future, but what you describe is indeed the current state.

Hi Stefan, I’d like to share 2 bugs I’m dealing with :

  • Lyrics are not well placed even when I update or change the size of the page in layout (I had to write them note by note because pasting a text doesn’t correctly link lyrics to the notes by the way).

  • dotted 4th appears as dotted 4th linked to an 8th in 6/8 bars, even if the size is correct in midi.

  • It seems impossible to ad a space between a word and a “?”, while in English “?” are supposed to be next to a word (e.g. “What?”), in French they are supposed to be spaced by a " " (e.g. “Quoi ?”) so how to do this without the software interprets the space as a change of note ?

Maybe you already know about these issues and have a solution ?

Thanks
