Joining audio tracks seamlessly

Hi. I’m trying to make a single mp3 file from a CD in which the piece broken up into tracks. On the CD, the tracks move seamlessly from one to the other so that the listener is not aware of the transition from one track to the next. But when I put the tracks into Cubase 12, prior to mixing them down into a single mp3 track, no matter how hard I try there’s always a slight break or hiccup between tracks. Is there a solution for this problem?

Hi,

How did you get the files from CD to Cubase? Did you use the built-in Import from CD function?

Or did you grab the files differently at some external software?

Hi! I used Windows media player. I didn’t know about the import function in Cubase. But these are M4A files, and I understand that Cubase doesn’t support them.

Hi,
I’d suggest to use crossfades. Put all audio events (your songs) onto one track and let them overlap ever so slightly. Now, select both tracks and click “X”.

Happy Easter!

Thanks for the tip. I’ll try it, but I’ve already tried with them on separate tracks, crossfading each ‘by hand’. But maybe this way will be better. I’ll report back when I’ve tried it. Happy Easter to you too!

Hi, crossfading on separate tracks doesn’t work by definition

Import as WAV if you can - there shouldn’t really be but you could get extra frames of audio after conversion to mp3/m4a.

In Cubase make sure you are aligning them using Events which will snap the ends of them together instead of using bar/quantised alignment:

@philmac That’s part of the problem - the original files on CD are m4a. Thus, it might be unlikely to get zero crossings between converted files. That’s why I suggested crossfades. However, aligning events like you suggested is a good approach IMO. I would at least give it a try since that would be the most elegant solution.

Thanks for all your help. Snapping to events did the trick - I wasn’t aware of this option.
