This is unfinished version of" Joni", inspired by the great Joni Mitchell who holds a spot in my heart. My friend Glen Caruba is putting percussion on this track this week so it can be heard before and after. I wrote this after I watched “Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind” on Netflicks. Just how I was feeling after seeing that movie…
It’s Piano/Bass so not much yet 2 mix, but please share any suggestions. I’m hoping to have it finished this week

Yeah, I can just hear Joni singing on that, bass sounds terrific, is itTrilian ? or for real…can’t tell, piano sounds a touch boxy on my baby Genelecs…classy work, Kevin
Yep! Up to your usual quality!
Sounds a touch boxy on my Adams also… i hope the final mix isn’t as hot or dynamically squashed too, but i’m guessing this is just because it’s ‘in progress’.
V nice with the first bit of sunshine we’ve had here in a while too!
hey kenny, nice to hear this before the percussion adds. as I was listening I tried imagining how I would approach that so it’ll be cool to hear what happens. enjoyed it as is, you have great style on the keys, bass floats around without getting in the way.
Yeah nice, excellent programming if that bass is VSTi!
Looking forward to the full song

Thanks so much for pointing that out. I am playing with Vienna Mir and I stupidly left the verb on in Vienna Imperial Piano which I hate. The bass is Trillian in the same room in MIR as piano. I added some high end to it to bring out the finger noise and ran it through Ampeg SVX but most of sound comes by just placing it in MIR.
Which model number of Genelecs do you have. I have been looking for new monitors and I’ve heard the Genelecs are great. The only ones I heard were slightly (understatement lol) beyond my budget but they sounded so great.

Yep it’s certainly not final, my friend Denny has a great analog console that I use (or he uses) for my final mixes. It really helps I think and he has great ears. Tell me about the Adams I haven’t heard them and I want to gather info. The squashed part was exactly right I ran it through a UAD LA2A and then a Brickwall limiter to raise the volume. I was being lazy, hope this version isn’t as bad I turned that off and just ran through a UAD Multiband and Uad Precision Limiter to raise volume.

The bass is VSTi but I played it from begin to end no quantize and did very few edits that’s why the piano and Bass aren’t exactly together at different points. I did the key switches after I played parts to make it sound a little more real. I am so glad you like it
I have Genelec 8020A’s which are perfect for my room size 3metres by 4metres, and believe me…they certainly fill the room and are perfect for near field monitoring, technically speaking I should have the bass woofer but thats an expensive item, I believe if you have big speakers in a small room then you can not get far enough away from them to hear the sweet spot… best to you, Kevin
piano soumds better now.to my ears anyway !!!
Hi Kenny,
we share a love for JM.
This piece is really lovely, and I wonder what percussion will add to it.
I’m happy with it “as is”. Understated but rich at the same time.
It could be my cans (my lady is trying to sleep) but the piano sounds
a little too brilliant (for me) on just some of the louder treble notes.
Bass is wonderful, although I wonder if you really need so much top?
Again, just a personal preference.
But all up, an exquisite tribute to a talented artist.
Thanks for that, I did add some 6-8k that probably doesn’t need to be there. After so many years playing so loud I often have that issue on high end so I am sure you are right! Sad but that is why I usually let someone do my final mix I cut the percussion today and will have mix soon.
When most people think of percussion they think of bongo/conga/clave etc. Glen is a great technician but really more of a painter, true original artist and he is percussion’s Picasso lol He made things very dark and very simple He played on my song Libby’s Lullaby which also started out as just piano/horns/bass
Since we share love of Joni do you think vocals would help or should I just let it go??? Just wondering
Never really listened to anything jazz oriented much, but the chords in this piece are intriguing. Slightly unusual to my ears but no less enjoyable. Sounding good so far.
Personally, I don’t think it needs vocals.
Schweet as is.
If Joni did this she would have a vocal on it…
Hi Kenny,
This is another fine piece of music.
Just like you and Jet I’m a big Joni fan, I’ve got most of her work and listen to it regularly.
This has got a real Joni vibe, well done!
Cheers,
Wim
Johnathan you have no idea how nice that is to hear! I have done mostly pop, rock, latin and country for others but I do love world and Jazz stuff. Hearing your comment tells me that I did something that one of hero says to do.
Here is quote from Charlie Mingus
“Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple”.
I hopefully achieved that this time…It goes for all music or anything in life I think lol…
Ken, it’s up to your usual standards. Nice changes, nice tune, nice keys! Agree with earlier comments on the eq. I look forward to hearing drums on it. It would stand alone, but if you had an inspiration for lyrics and a good vocalist, I can imagine it. It just a different song than this.
Bump…
Good stuff!
You’re welcome Jazz kinda stuff is a genre I’d really like to get into more and listen to/learn. Not familiar with the different sub genres, I think I like lounge jazz a lot… Anyway, let’s hear the finished version soon
