Now that I’ve figured out how useful the “Start voice” and “end voice” properties are, I’d love to have key commands for each. I’m well aware of, and have frequently used, the “show/hide rests” command. The advantage of using “start/end voice” is that with one action you hide the rests that are not “primary” to the bar (as opposed to having to select the ones you want to hide). Given that “start voice” and “end voice” exist as options, I’d love to be able assign key commands to them. Hey, couldn’t hurt! No obligation for anyone to use them. But I’d love to have them.
Actually, I ended up simply creating macros for Start Voice and End Voice and assigning them App Shortcuts in the Mac OS Keyboard Shortcuts system settings. Works fine, but of course that approach has real limitations. So I’d love to see Dorico allow us to assign key commands to macros from within Dorico itself. Or… is there a way to do this already that I’m missing?
It’s indeed possible, but it requires editing your keycommands_en.json file.
The path to this file is: c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Dorico 6 on Windows or /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6 on Mac
The command to insert there looks like this (here on Windows, to create a shortcut to my “Hide Tuplets” macro):
I use it for quite a few macros and it works very well — it’s just a bit tricky the first time! Before doing it, make sure to save your current keycommands_en.json file somewhere, just in case.
Alternatively, you can also trigger your macros from the jump bar.
And with that procedure (which is exactly what I referred to in my first reply), it might be better to trigger the actual command rather than the macro that triggers the command - cutting out the middle man. Probably won’t have much effect but you never know.
Thanks, both! I do realize that that’s possible, although a quick attempt on my part to try out Daniel’s instructions foundered because I couldn’t figure out where to paste the commands in the json file. (I’ll admit I didn’t try that hard.) The point of my follow-up post is that I’d like Dorico to make it super-easy and have custom macros available for key command assignment in the standard key command interface in the Preferences dialogue, the way, e.g., custom text styles can be assigned key commands. Like, for instance, this text style I created for narration within a score.
The team is aware that this is a frequent request, so there may be improvements in this area. If I remember correctly, the key commands for playing techniques (and maybe also for paragraph styles?) arrived with Dorico 6. So we can hope for more improvements in the next versions!
