Doing this manually becomes a cumbersome task if more than one or two inserts are involved.
It is not just a matter of visual appearance, it is rather an exclusion criterion for some key commands/macos like “Open/Close All Inserts on Selected Track”. They don’t work if there’s an empty insert slot up front or somewhere in between.
Till this FR is implemented, there is always a way, if insisting not to use MIDI Remote for this.
We can setup Project Process Logical Editor Presets, which in the Pre-Process Commands section have just an insert slot, and in the Post-Process, another one. Then in our final macro we can combine these (8) PLEs, and we’ll no longer have the issue of interrupted macros.
Here’s for example two screenshots, for inserts 1-2 and 3-4:
If we combine these two (another 6 are needed for the total of 16 inserts), we can have this macro:
You may want to give this a try, I think it won’t fail. Nevertheless this approach of toggling, will eventually fail if we have some inserts already open/closed, since the available commands are for toggling only.
However, this was only one example for empty slots being a hinderance. It’s also a matter of reorganizing the order of plugins during mixing. If you are not up for wasting empty slots right at the start or somewhere in between then shuffling them around manually becomes a drag in the literal sense of the word.
