nevertheless I tried old school windows techniques:
Alt+L to open the Layers menu
then press “G”
BUT that key trail navigates to “New Group” first and then to “Group”

Yes, but @ctreitzell means that both commands (New Group and Group) do have the same shortcut key assigned when used from the Layer menu. So if you work with these kind of shortcuts you will never get the Group function.
